8f043de961 player/sub: avoid wasteful subtitle redraws
This only affects two special cases: printing subtitles to the terminal
and printing subtitles on a still picture. Previously, mpv was very dumb
here and spammed this logic on every single loop. For terminal
subtitles, this isn't as big of a deal, but for the image case this is
pretty bad. The entire VO constantly redrew even when there was no need
to which can be very expensive depending on user settings.

Instead, let's rework sub_read_packets so that it also tells us whether
or not the subtitle packets update in some way in addition to telling us
whether or not to read more. Since we cache all packets thanks to the
previous commit, we can leverage this information to make a guess
whether or not the current subtitle packet is supposed to be visible on
the screen. Because the redraw now only happens when it is needed, the
mp_set_timeout_hack can be removed.

062104d16e sub: redecode cached packets on UPDATE_SUB_HARD or UPDATE_SUB_FILT
UPDATE_SUB_HARD causes all of the ass objects to reset in order to apply
the new style. UPDATE_SUB_FILT doesn't actually reset the sd, but it
should in order to update the actual filters so that was added here.
Doing this causes the current subtitle to be dropped. In the paused
cause, this concidentally works because command.c forces a video refresh
which then reloads the subtitle essentially. But while playing, the
subtitle will be dropped and you won't get anything until the next one
appears.

Instead of using video refreshes, what we can do is just always save the
last two subtitle packets in a cache and redecode them if needed. This
is much easier and also allows us to get rid of all the video refresh
logic in command.c. Fixes #12386.

3a572c7a88 Revert "demux: improve stream selection state"
The stream selection state wasn't improved. I didn't realize this messed
with caches. All in all, just not a good idea. Back to drawing board I
guess.

This reverts commit f40bbfec4f.

f40bbfec4f demux: improve stream selection state
This replaces the previous commit and makes more sense. The internal
demux marked tracks as eager depending on their type and for subtitles
it would always lazily read them unless there happened to be no
available av stream. However, we want the sub stream to be eager if the
player is paused. The existing subtitle is still preserved on the
screen, but if the user changes tracks that's when the problem occurs.
So to handle this case, propagate the mpctx->paused down to the stream
selection logic. This modifies both demuxer_refresh_track and
demuxer_select_track to take that boolean value. A few other parts of
the player use this, but we can just assume false there (no change in
behavior from before) since they should never be related to subtitles.
The core player code is aware of its own state naturally, and can always
pass the appropriate value so go ahead and do so. When we change the
pause state, a refresh seek is done on all existing subtitle tracks to
make sure their eager state is the appropriate value (i.e. so it's not
still set to eager after a pause and a track switch). Slightly invasive
change, but it works with the existing logic instead of going around it
so ultimately it should be a better approach. We can additionally remove
the old force boolean from sub_read_packets since it is no longer
needed.

a323dfae42 sub: fix switching tracks while paused
Internal subtitles were not shown when switching between tracks while
mpv was paused. The reason for this is simply because the demuxer data

basically just retrying until the packet is actually available when the

024e0cd4c1 options: only apply sub-visibility to primary subs
Previously, the sub-visibility option changed the visibility of all

b6ebd1a15e sub: align ytdl-hook secondary subs to the top
29e15e6248 prefixed youtube-dl's subs url with an edl prefix to not
download them until they're selected, which is useful when there are
many sub languages. But this prefix broke the alignment of secondary
subs, which would overlap the primary subs instead of always being
placed at the top. This can be tested with
--sub-file='edl://!no_clip;!delay_open,media_type=sub;secondary_sub.srt'

When a sub is added, sub.c:reinit_sub() is called. This calls in
init_subdec() -> dec_sub.c:sub_create() -> init_decoder() ->
sd_ass:init(). Then reinit_sub() calls
sub_control(track->d_sub, SD_CTRL_SET_TOP, &(bool){!!order}) which sets
sd_ass_priv.on_top = true for secondary subs.

But for EDL subs the real sub is initialized again when in
dec_sub.c:sub_read_packets() is_new_segment() returns true and
update_segment() is called, or when sub_get_bitmaps() calls
update_segment(). update_segment() then calls init_decoder(), which
calls sd_ass:init(), so sd_ass_priv is reinitialized, and its on_top
property is left false. This commit sets it to true again.

For URLs that need to be downloaded it seems that the update_segment()
call that reinitializes sd_ass_priv is always the one in
sub_read_packets(), but with local subs sub_get_bitmaps() is usually
called earlier (though there shouldn't be a reason to use the EDL URL
for local subs), so I added the order parameter to sub_create(), rather
than adding it to all of update_segment(), sub_read_packets() and
sub_get_bitmaps().

Also removes the cast to bool in the other sub_control call, since
sub/sd_ass.c:control already casts arg to bool when cmd is
SD_CTRL_SET_TOP.

e9e883e3b2 video: make OSD/subtitle bitmaps refcounted (sort of)
Making OSD/subtitle bitmaps refcounted was planend a longer time ago,
e.g. the sub_bitmaps.packed field (which refcounts the subtitle bitmap
data) was added in 2016. But nothing benefited much from it, because
struct sub_bitmaps was usually stack allocated, and there was this weird
callback stuff through osd_draw().

Make it possible to get actually refcounted subtitle bitmaps on the OSD
API level. For this, we just copy all subtitle data other than the
bitmaps with sub_bitmaps_copy(). At first, I had planned some fancy
refcount shit, but when that was a big mess and hard to debug and just
boiled to emulating malloc(), I made it a full allocation+copy. This
affects mostly the parts array. With crazy ASS subtitles, this parts
array can get pretty big (thousands of elements or more), in which case
the extra alloc/copy could become performance relevant. But then again
this is just pure bullshit, and I see no need to care. In practice, this
extra work most likely gets drowned out by libass murdering a single
core (while mpv is waiting for it) anyway. So fuck it.

I just wanted this so draw_bmp.c requires only a single call to render
everything. VOs also can benefit from this, because the weird callback
shit isn't necessary anymore (simpler code), but I haven't done anything
about it yet. In general I'd hope this will work towards simplifying the
OSD layer, which is prerequisite for making actual further improvements.

I haven't tested some cases such as the "overlay-add" command. Maybe it
crashes now? Who knows, who cares.

In addition, it might be worthwhile to reduce the code duplication
between all the things that output subtitle bitmaps (with repacking,
image allocation, etc.), but that's orthogonal.

0b35b4c917 sub: make filter_sdh a "proper" filter, allow runtime changes
Until now, filter_sdh was simply a function that was called by sd_ass
directly (if enabled).

I want to add another filter, so it's time to turn this into a somewhat
more general subtitle filtering infrastructure.

I pondered whether to reuse the audio/video filtering stuff - but better
not. Also, since subtitles are horrible and tend to refuse proper
abstraction, it's still messed into sd_ass, instead of working on the
dec_sub.c level. Actually mpv used to have subtitle "filters" and even
made subtitle converters part of it, but it was fairly horrible, so
don't do that again.

In addition, make runtime changes possible. Since this was supposed to
be a quick hack, I just decided to put all subtitle filter options into
a separate option group (=> simpler change notification), to manually
push the change through the playloop (like it was sort of before for OSD
options), and to recreate the sub filter chain completely in every
change. Should be good enough.

One strangeness is that due to prefetching and such, most subtitle
packets (or those some time ahead) are actually done filtering when we
change, so the user still needs to manually seek to actually refresh
everything. And since subtitle data is usually cached in ASS_Track (for
other terrible but user-friendly reasons), we also must clear the
subtitle data, but of course only on seek, since otherwise all subtitles
would just disappear. What a fucking mess, but such is life. We could
trigger a "refresh seek" to make this more automatic, but I don't feel
like it currently.

This is slightly inefficient (lots of allocations and copying), but I
decided that it doesn't matter. Could matter slightly for crazy ASS
subtitles that render with thousands of events.

Not very well tested. Still seems to work, but I didn't have many test
cases.

b9d351f02a Implement backwards playback
See manpage additions. This is a huge hack. You can bet there are shit
tons of bugs. It's literally forcing square pegs into round holes.
Hopefully, the manpage wall of text makes it clear enough that the whole
shit can easily crash and burn. (Although it shouldn't literally crash.
That would be a bug. It possibly _could_ start a fire by entering some
sort of endless loop, not a literal one, just something where it tries
to do work without making progress.)

(Some obvious bugs I simply ignored for this initial version, but
there's a number of potential bugs I can't even imagine. Normal playback
should remain completely unaffected, though.)

How this works is also described in the manpage. Basically, we demux in
reverse, then we decode in reverse, then we render in reverse.

The decoding part is the simplest: just reorder the decoder output. This
weirdly integrates with the timeline/ordered chapter code, which also
has special requirements on feeding the packets to the decoder in a
non-straightforward way (it doesn't conflict, although a bugmessmass
breaks correct slicing of segments, so EDL/ordered chapter playback is
broken in backward direction).

Backward demuxing is pretty involved. In theory, it could be much
easier: simply iterating the usual demuxer output backward. But this
just doesn't fit into our code, so there's a cthulhu nightmare of shit.
To be specific, each stream (audio, video) is reversed separately. At
least this means we can do backward playback within cached content (for
example, you could play backwards in a live stream; on that note, it
disables prefetching, which would lead to losing new live video, but
this could be avoided).

The fuckmess also meant that I didn't bother trying to support
subtitles. Subtitles are a problem because they're "sparse" streams.
They need to be "passively" demuxed: you don't try to read a subtitle
packet, you demux audio and video, and then look whether there was a
subtitle packet. This means to get subtitles for a time range, you need
to know that you demuxed video and audio over this range, which becomes
pretty messy when you demux audio and video backwards separately.

Backward display is the most weird (and potentially buggy) part. To
avoid that we need to touch a LOT of timing code, we negate all
timestamps. The basic idea is that due to the navigation, all
comparisons and subtractions of timestamps keep working, and you don't
need to touch every single of them to "reverse" them.

E.g.:

    bool before = pts_a < pts_b;

would need to be:

    bool before = forward
        ? pts_a < pts_b
        : pts_a > pts_b;

or:

    bool before = pts_a * dir < pts_b * dir;

or if you, as it's implemented now, just do this after decoding:

    pts_a *= dir;
    pts_b *= dir;

and then in the normal timing/renderer code:

    bool before = pts_a < pts_b;

Consequently, we don't need many changes in the latter code. But some
assumptions inhererently true for forward playback may have been broken
anyway. What is mainly needed is fixing places where values are passed
between positive and negative "domains". For example, seeking and
timestamp user display always uses positive timestamps. The main mess is
that it's not obvious which domain a given variable should or does use.

Well, in my tests with a single file, it suddenly started to work when I
did this. I'm honestly surprised that it did, and that I didn't have to
change a single line in the timing code past decoder (just something
minor to make external/cached text subtitles display). I committed it
immediately while avoiding thinking about it. But there really likely
are subtle problems of all sorts.

As far as I'm aware, gstreamer also supports backward playback. When I
looked at this years ago, I couldn't find a way to actually try this,
and I didn't revisit it now. Back then I also read talk slides from the
person who implemented it, and I'm not sure if and which ideas I might
have taken from it. It's possible that the timestamp reversal is
inspired by it, but I didn't check. (I think it claimed that it could
avoid large changes by changing a sign?)

VapourSynth has some sort of reverse function, which provides a backward
view on a video. The function itself is trivial to implement, as
VapourSynth aims to provide random access to video by frame numbers (so
you just request decreasing frame numbers). From what I remember, it
wasn't exactly fluid, but it worked. It's implemented by creating an
index, and seeking to the target on demand, and a bunch of caching. mpv
could use it, but it would either require using VapourSynth as demuxer
and decoder for everything, or replacing the current file every time
something is supposed to be played backwards.

FFmpeg's libavfilter has reversal filters for audio and video. These
require buffering the entire media data of the file, and don't really
fit into mpv's architecture. It could be used by playing a libavfilter
graph that also demuxes, but that's like VapourSynth but worse.

6aad532aa3 options: move most subtitle and OSD rendering options to sub structs
Remove them from the big MPOpts struct and move them to their sub
structs. In the places where their fields are used, create a private
copy of the structs, instead of accessing the semi-deprecated global
option struct instance (mpv_global.opts) directly.

This actually makes accessing these options finally thread-safe. They
weren't even if they should have for years. (Including some potential
for undefined behavior when e.g. the OSD font was changed at runtime.)

This is mostly transparent. All options get moved around, but most users
of the options just need to access a different struct (changing sd.opts
to a different type changes a lot of uses, for example).

One thing which has to be considered and could cause potential
regressions is that the new option copies must be explicitly updated.
sub_update_opts() takes care of this for example.

Another thing is that writing to the option structs manually won't work,
because the changes won't be propagated to other copies. Apparently the
only affected case is the implementation of the sub-step command, which
tries to change sub_delay. Handle this one explicitly (osd_changed()
doesn't need to be called anymore, because changing the option triggers
UPDATE_OSD, and updates the OSD as a consequence). The way the option
value is propagated is rather hacky, but for now this will do.

3e89e061c2 sd_lavc: remove old broken heuristic
This core of this heuristic was once copied from MPlayer's spudec.c. I
think it was meant for the case when the resolution field was missing or
so.

I couldn't find a file for which this actually does something. On the
other hand, there are samples which actually have a smaller resolution
than 720x576, and which are broken by this old hack.

For subtitles that set no resolution (I'm not sure which codec/container
that would be), there's still the fallback on video resolution.

Just get rid of this hack. Also cleanup a bit. SD_CTRL_GET_RESOLUTION
hasn't been used since DVD menu removal. get_resolution() is left with 1
call site, and would be quite awkward to keep, so un-inline it.

05b2cd08dc sub: make preloading more robust
Subtitles can be preloaded, which means they're fully read and copied
into ASS_Track. This in turn is mainly for the sake of being able to do
subtitle seeking (when it comes down to it, subtitle seeking is the
cause for most trouble here).

Commit a714f8e92 broke preloaded subtitles which have events with
unknown duration, such as some MicroDVD samples. The event list gets
cleared on every seek, so the property of being preloaded obviously gets
lost.

Fix this by moving most of the preloading logic to dec_sub.c. If the
subtitle list gets cleared, they are not considered preloaded anymore,
and the logic for demuxed subtitles is used.

As another minor thing, preloadeding subtitles did neither disable the
demux stream, nor did it discard packets. Thus you could get queue
overflows in theory (harmless, but annoying). Fix this by explicitly
discarding packets in preloaded mode.

In summary, now the only difference between preloaded and normal
demuxing are:
1. a seek is issued, and all packets are read on start
2. during playback, discard the packets instead of feeding them to the
   subtitle decoder

This is still petty annoying. It would be nice if maintaining the
subtitle index (and maybe a subtitle packet cache for instant subtitle
presentation when seeking back) could be maintained in the demuxer
instead. Half of all file formats with interleaved subtitles have
this anyway (mp4, mkv muxed with newer mkvmerge).

This copies all attached fonts on each subtitle init. I considered

more complex.

Since it's slightly harder to get a list of active demuxers with
duplicate removed, the prev_demuxer variable serves as a hack to achieve
almost the same thing, except in weird corner cases. (In which fonts

6d9cb89333 sub: clear subtitle list when crossing timeline boundary
When crossing timeline boundaries (such as switching to a new segment or
chapter with ordered chapters), clear the internal text subtitle list.
This breaks the sub-seek command, but is otherwise not too harmful.
Fixes Sub-OC-test-final7.mkv. (The internal text subtitle list is
basically a cache to make subtitles show up at the right time when
seeking back.)

I suspect this was caused by 76fcef61. The sample file times subtitles
slightly before the video frame when it should show up. This is to avoid
problems with subtitles showing up a frame later than intended. It also
means that a subtitle which is supposed to show up on the start of a
timeline part boundary actually might first be shown in a different
part. Since we now manipulate the packet timestamps, instead of
manipulating timestamps after the subtitle decoder, this means this
subtitle event would have 2 timestamps, which our code of course does
not handle.

If the two parts come one after another, this would actually work (since
the subtitle would have the same timestamps in the old and new part),
but it breaks if the new part (which follows the old part in the
physical file) is has a completely different start time in the timeline.

Essentially, the trick used to time subtitles correctly is incompatible
with the way we cache subtitles (to make them survive seeks).

The simple solution is just clearing the cached subtitles when crossing
chapter boundaries.

a2e7642d3c sub: allow feeding bitmap subs in advance

needed locally in dec_sub.c; keep it there.) It asks the decoder whether
there is place for at least 1 subtitle packet. sd_lavc implements it and
returns true if its internal fixed-size subtitle queue still has a free
slot. (The implementation of this in dec_sub.c isn't entirely clean.
For one, decode_chain() ignores this mechanism, so it's implied that
bitmap subtitles do not use the subtitle filter chain in any advanced
way.)

Also fix 2 bugs in the sd_lavc queue handling. Subtitles must be checked
in reverse, because the first entry will often have endpts==NOPTS, which
would always match. alloc_sub() must cycle the queue buffer, because it
reuses memory allocations (like sub.imgs) by design.

5a89150a46 player: remove OSD subtitle render path
This was used with --no-sub-ass (aka --no-ass). This option (which is
not yet removed) strips all styling from the subtitles, and renders them
as plaintext only. For some reason, it originally seemed convenient to
reuse all the OSD text rendering code (osd_libass.c). While this was
indeed simple, it had a bad influence on the rest of the code. For
example, it had to decide whether to go through the OSD code path, or
the proper subtitle renderer in sd_ass.c.

Kill the OSD subtitle renderer. Reimplement --no-sub-ass and also
"secondary" subtitles in sd_ass.c. fill_plaintext() contains some rather
minor code duplication with osd_libass.c for setting up a dummy
ASS_Event and escaping the stripped text. Since sd_ass.c already has to
handle "normal" text subtitles, and has code for stripping ASS tags,
this remains all relatively simple.

Remove all the unnecessary crap from the rest of the code.

385febe276 sub: protect ASS_Renderer state
Each subtitle track gets its own decoder instance (sd_ass). But they use
a shared ASS_Renderer. This is done mainly because of fontconfig.
Initializing fontconfig is very slow when using it with memory fonts, so
there's a practical need to cache this memory font state, which is done
by not creating separate ASS_Renderers. This is very dirty and very
evil, but we probably can't get rid of it any time soon.

The shared ASS_Renderer was not properly synchronized. While the program
logic guarantees that only one sd_ass instance is visible at a time,
there are other interactions that require synchronization. In
particular, I suspect concurrent execution of mp_ass_configure_fonts()
and sd_ass.get_bitmaps cause issues in a newer libass development
branch.

So here's a shitty hack that hopefully fixes things, hopefully only
until libass becomes less dependent on fontconfig.

92a9f11a0b sub: uglify sub decoder with locking
The plan is to make the whole OSD thread-safe, and we start with this.

We just put locks on all entry points (fortunately, dec_sub.c and all
sd_*.c decoders are very closed off, and only the entry points in
dec_sub.h let you access it). I think this is pretty ugly, but at least
it's very simple.

There's a special case with sub_get_bitmaps(): this function returns
pointers to decoder data (specifically, libass images). There's no way
to synchronize this internally, so expose sub_lock/sub_unlock functions.

To make things simpler, and especially because the lock is sort-of
exposed to the outside world, make the locks recursive. Although the
only case where this is actually needed (although trivial) is
sub_set_extradata().

One corner case are ASS subtitles: for some reason, we keep a single
ASS_Renderer instance for subtitles around (probably to avoid rescanning
fonts with ordered chapters), and this ASS_Renderer instance is not
synchronized. Also, demux_libass.c loads ASS_Track objects, which are
directly passed to sd_ass.c. These things are not synchronized (and
would be hard to synchronize), and basically we're out of luck. But I
think for now, accesses happen reasonably serialized, so there is no
actual problem yet, even if we start to access OSD from other threads.

0530447417 Add prelimimary (basic, possibly broken) dvdnav support
This readds a more or less completely new dvdnav implementation, though
it's based on the code from before commit 41fbcee. Note that this is
rather basic, and might be broken or not quite usable in many cases.

Most importantly, navigation highlights are not correctly implemented.
This would require changes in the FFmpeg dvdsub decoder (to apply a
different internal CLUT), so supporting it is not really possible right
now. And in fact, I don't think I ever want to support it, because it's
a very small gain for a lot of work. Instead, mpv will display fake
highlights, which are an approximate bounding box around the real
highlights.

Some things like mouse input or switching audio/subtitles stream using
the dvdnav VM are not supported.

Might be quite fragile on transitions: if dvdnav initiates a transition,
and doesn't give us enough mpeg data to initialize video playback, the
player will just quit.

This is added only because some users seem to want it. I don't intend to
make mpv a good DVD player, so the very basic minimum will have to do.
How about you just convert your DVD to proper video files?

639e672bd1 player: rearrange how subtitle context and stream headers are used
Use sh_stream over sh_sub. Use dec_sub (and mpctx->d_sub) instead of the
stream header. This aligns the subtitle code with the recent audio and
video refactoring.

sh_sub still has the decoder context, though. This is because we want to
avoid reinit when switching segments with ordered chapters. (Reinit is
fast, except for creating the ASS_Renderer, which in turn triggers
fontconfig.) Not sure how much this matters, though, because the initial
segment switch will lazily initialize the decoder anyway.

3000df35d3 sub: basic subtitle converters
Add a basic infrastructure for subtitle converters. These converters
work sort-of like decoders, except that they produce packets instead
of subtitle bitmaps. They are put in front of actual decoders.

Start with sd_movtext. 4 lines of code are blown up to a 55 lines file,
but fortunately this is not going to be that bad for the following
converters.

02ce316ade sub: refactor
Make the sub decoder stuff independent from sh_sub (except for
initialization of course). Sub decoders now access a struct sd only,
instead of getting access to sh_sub. The glue code in dec_sub.c is
similarily independent from osd.

Some simplifications are made. For example, the switch_id stuff is
unneeded: the frontend code just has to make sure to call osd_changed()
any time subtitles are switched.

This is also preparation for introducing subtitle converters. It's much
cleaner to completely separate demuxer header/renderer glue/decoders
for this purpose, especially since sub converters might completely
change how demuxer headers have to be interpreted.

Also pass data as demux_packets. Currently, this doesn't help much, but
libavcodec converters might need scary stuff like packet side data, so
it's perhaps better to go with passing packets.

27d383918a core: add demux_sub pseudo demuxer
Subtitle files are opened in mplayer.c, not using the demuxer
infrastructure in general. Pretend that this is not the case (outside of
the loading code) by opening a pseudo demuxer that does nothing. One
advantage is that the initialization code is now the same, and there's
no confusion about what the difference between track->stream,
track->sh_sub and mpctx->sh_sub is supposed to be.

This is a bit stupid, and it would be much better if there were proper
subtitle demuxers (there are many in recent FFmpeg, but not Libav). So
for now this is just a transition to a more proper architecture. Look
at demux_sub like an artifical limb: it's ugly, but don't hate it - it
helps you to get on with your life.

b44202b69f sub: redo how -no-ass is handled
The -no-ass switch used to disable any use of libass for text subtitles.
This is not really the case anymore, because libass is now always
involved when rendering text. The only remaining use of -no-ass is
disabling styling or showing subtitles on the terminal. On the other
hand, the old subtitle rendering path is a big reason why the subtitle
code is still a big mess with an awful number of obscure special cases.

In order to simplify it, remove the old subtitle rendering code, and
always go through sd_ass.c. Basically, we use ASS_Track as central data
structure for storing text subtitles instead of struct sub_data. This
also makes libass mandatory for all text subs, even if they are printed
to the terminal in -no-video mode. (We could add something like sd_text
to avoid this, but it's not worth the trouble.)

struct sub_data and subreader.c are still around, even its ASS/SSA
reader. But struct sub_data is freed right after converting it to
ASS_Track. The internal ASS reader actually can handle some obscure
cases libass can't, like files encoded in UTF-16.
