Add regression tests for ctf reading
This patch implements some regression tests for ctf reading. Since the code shares a lot of functionalities already used in the readi-dwarf test, a library was built and test common harness were moved to a common location. So input files for test-read-{dwarf,ctf}.cc now are located in: tests/data/test-read-common directory, ABIs description are stored in the same location but in a separate file, one for each binary debugging information: (e.g, test4-ctf.so.abi and test4-dwarf.so.abi) * tests/test-read-ctf.cc: New ctf reading regression test. * tests/test-read-common.cc: New library to be used with test-read-{ctf,dwarf}.cc. * tests/test-read-common.h: Likewise. * tests/test-annotate.cc (in_out_specs): Adjust path for input files. * tests/Makefile.am: Build new tests/test-read-ctf.cc file. * tests/data/Makefile.am: Add test inputs and expected files. Bug 28584 - Don't drop global variables that lack DW_AT_external
Clang doesn't always emit the DW_AT_external property that flags a decl as being external. In those cases, the DWARF reader just drops the variable on the floor as it considers it as being "non-exported". This patch considers that a variable decl that is at named namespace scope is essentially "external". Then if the variable has an ELF symbol associated to it, then an IR node will be created for it. The other changes are just needed adaptations due to the core change. * src/abg-dwarf-reader.cc (die_is_effectively_public_decl): Define new static function. Move dwarf_reader::status facilities to an abigail::elf_reader namespace
The DWARF reader is no longer the only ELF-based reader in libabigail: the CTF reader also operates on ELF files. Other ELF-based formats (such as BTF) may also join in the future. These readers share a lot of similarities: they all operate on object files, they fetch debugging information from certain sections, they rely on the symtab of the read object, the debugging info may be in a separated file (for certain formats) and so on. It follows that a lot of logic can be shared among all the ELF-based readers. This patch is oriented to that direction. A new namespace, abigail::elf_reader, is introduced with the goal of holding features and definitions useful for any ELF-based abigail reader. Then all the definitions related to the status resulting from extracting a corpus from an object file (the dwarf_reader::status) are moved to abigail::elf_reader. symtab-reader: add support for binaries compiled with CFI
Control-Flow-Integrity (CFI) when enabled in clang built binaries introduces an indirection when looking up ELF symbols. For DSO, the symbol table (.dynsym) will still contain the symbols, but additional symbols with suffix .cfi will be added to the full .symtab. Unfortunately, the DWARF debug information refers to CFI symbols by address to the .cfi suffixed variants as they point to the actual implementation. When the dwarf reader is determining whether to suppress variable or function declarations, it does so by identifying if there is an associated ELF symbol at the given address read from DWARF. Unless we know about the alternative address, this will fail and the type information will be suppressed. Hence add the .cfi symbol values to the lookup map to associate their address with the corresponding publicly exported symbol. * src/abg-symtab-reader.cc (symtab::load_): use new add_alternative_address_lookups method. dwarf-reader: Canonicalize opaque enums and classes
This issue was reported in bug https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=27700. When we construct an opaque type (triggered by the use of --drop-private-types along with the --headers-dir option on abidw, for instance) with get_opaque_version_of_type we forget to canonicalize the resulting type. Later, at abixml emitting time (for instance) hash_as_canonical_type_or_constant would rightfully abort because the type wasn't canonicalized. We want all types (okay, modulo one exception) in the system to be canonicalized. dwarf-reader/writer: consider aliases when dealing with suppressions
When the symbol of a decl is suppressed and it happens to be the main symbol of a group of aliased symbols where another symbol is not suppressed, the dwarf reader discards the decl from the internal representation altogether upon reading and thus the writer will not be able to connect that decl to the non-suppressed aliased elf symbol. In order to address this, ensure we are not suppressing decls for which an alias is not suppressed. We therefore keep the decl in the IR when at least one its underlying aliased symbols is non-suppressed. Likewise, when the abg-writer is having to attach an elf-symbol-id to the decl, instead of omitting the symbol altogether, rather make use of the property of aliases and connect the dwarf information to an alias instead. This way the function dwarf information stays connected to the elf symbol that we want to track. When reading from XML with a symbol whitelist that leads to suppression of aliased symbols, abidiff would hit an assertion and crash when looking up the aliased symbol due to it being suppressed. In the new symtab reader we can still suppress a symbol without removing it from the lookup. Make use of that property to fix this bug. Re-license the project to Apache v2 With LLVM Exception
Thanks to the previous work done, changing the license is just a matter of changing the SPDX identifer from "LGPL-3.0-or-later" to "Apache-2.0 WITH LLVM-exception". Note that for the abigail.m4, tests/test-dot.cc and tests/test-svg.cc the change was from "GPL-3.0-or-later WITH GCC-exception-3.1" to "Apache-2.0 WITH LLVM-exception". include/abg-cxx-compat.h was changed from "LGPL-2.0-or-later" to "Apache-2.0 WITH LLVM-exception". Replace individual license references with SPDX Identifiers
This patch replaces license headers with SPDX identifiers in all files containing license headers. For each file, the SPDX identifier formally represents its current license. Note that the list of SPDX identifiers is available on the SPDX web site at https://spdx.org/licenses. For autoconf-archive/ax_prog_python_version.m4 however, there is a little catch. Dodji Seketeli wrote this ax_check_python_modules.m4. Just like the other autoconf-archive macros, it makes sense to have it under the FSF All Permissive license. Actually, the terms of that license was already in the file but then the license header was wrongly set to GPLv2 with autoconf exception. Location expressions might occasionally be of length 0. E.g. a reason for that are thread local variables that do not exactly have a location to refer to. Compilers/Linkers may choose an empty location description. Bug 26568 - Union should support more than one anonymous member
When building a union type we try to ensure that each member is present only once. This is because the code to build the union is also used to actually update a partially constructed union. To do so, before adding a member to the union, the member is looked up (among the current members) by name to see if it's already present or not. But then for anonymous members, the name of the member is empty. After the first anonymous member is added to the union, subsequent look-ups with an empty name all succeed. So no more than one anonymous member is added to the union. Oops. A way to fix this is to perform the lookup by taking into account the type of the anonymous data member, not its (empty) name. We already do this for anonymous data members of classes/structs. This patch thus uses that type-based anonymous data member lookup for unions. But then now that unions can have several anonymous members, another issue was uncovered. Array types whose elements are of anonymous type can be wrongly considered different because of canonicalization issues. Let's suppose we have these two arrays whose internal pretty representation are: "__anonymous_struct_1__ foo[5]" and "__anonymous_struct_2__ foo[5]" These are arrays of 5 elements of type anonymous struct. Suppose the anonymous structs "__anonymous_struct_1__" and "__anonymous_struct_2__" are structurally equivalent. Because the internal names of these array element types are different, the internal pretty representations of the arrays are different. And thus the canonical types of the two arrays are different. And that's wrong. In this particular case, they should have the same canonical type and thus be considered equivalent. This patch thus teaches 'get_type_name' to make the internal type name of anonymous types of a given kind be the same. Thus, making all arrays of 5 anonymous struct have the same pretty representation: "__anonymous_struct__ foo[5]" This gives the type canonicalizer a chance to detect that those arrays having the same canonical type. These two changes while being seemingly unrelated need to be bundled together to fix a number of issues in the existing test reference outputs because fixing the first one is needed to uncover the later issue. * src/abg-dwarf-reader.cc (add_or_update_union_type): Don't use the empty name of anonymous members in the lookup to ensure that all data members are unique. Bug 26261 - Fix logic for canonicalizing DW_TAG_subroutine_type DIEs
In the function compare_dies, the handling of DW_TAG_subroutine_type was unfinished. This DIE represents function types pointed-to by function pointer. It doesn't represent the type of a "real" function type like the abigail::ir::function_type would. The represent more an interface to a function, which a pointer can point to or which can be used to issue a call. So intended idea is that compare_dies compares two DIEs of the DW_TAG_subroutine_type and DW_TAG_subprogram kind (the later represents real function definitions) among other kinds, structurally, but by trying to optimize for speed, for the purpose of canonicalizing DIEs even before type canonicalization happens at the libabigail IR level. This is critical to save space (and time) by doing DIE de-duplication on huge binaries. This patch finishes to implement the comparison for DW_TAG_subroutine_type and comes with a carefully crafted test case that hits that code path. * src/abg-dwarf-reader.cc (compare_dies): Get out early if we are are in the middle of a potential recursive comparison of function types. abg-writer: Add support for stable hash type ids.
The type ids currently emitted by the XML writer are simply type-id-1, type-id-2 etc. Additions or removals of types early in this sequence result in cascading changes to many other XML elements. This commit adds support for stable type ids in the form of hashes of libabigail's internal type names. On fairly rare occasions (typically involving unnamed types), the names of two distinct types can be the same. In any case, if there is a hash collision the XML writer will find the next unused id and so preserve uniqueness. Diffs between large XML files produced using --type-id-style hash will be much smaller and easier to review. Guard testing v4.19+ AARCH64 kernel module loading for EL6 support
When analyzing an AARCH64 linux kernel module built with support for either R_AARCH64_ABS64 or R_AARCH64_PREL32 relocations, we need these macros to be defined in elf.h (i.e a recent enough version of libelf), otherwise we cannot properly support those kernel modules using the scheme that uses the relocation table of the __ksymtab and __ksymtab_gpl sections to read those sections. In the future, I think we should automatically fallback to another way of trying to read those sections if those macros are not defined, and emit a message hinting at what is happening, when in verbose mode. I am keeping it as is for the moment, so that we can get a better case of the when these macros are not defined and whatnot. In the mean time, this patch conditionalizes the test that reads a kernel module build with support for these relocations to avoid running it on platform that support these relocations. * tests/test-read-dwarf.cc: Do not run the test on PR25007-sdhci.ko if the macros R_AARCH64_PREL32 and R_AARCH64_ABS64 are not defined. Bug 25007 - Don't use section-relative symbol values on ET_REL binaries
In relocatable files, two symbols listed in the .symtab section can have the same value and yet be different. That is because those symbols can be *defined* in different sections. And the value of those symbols represent addresses (offsets) within their own respective sections (a.k.a section-relative addresses). In the same time, symbol address as referred-to in the DWARF information are *not* section-relative, rather, they are relative to the beginning of the whole binary. Until now, the DWARF-referred-to symbol addresses were translated into section-relative addresses, so that they could be compared to the other section-relative addresses we were getting from listing the symbols and their values from the .symtab section. The problem with that approach is that, during the translation from binary-relative to section-relative addresses we were wrongly assuming that all symbols referenced from the DWARF were defined in the .text section. This is wrong especially for ET_REL files because they could be defined in sections named .foo.text or .bar.text, for instance. This leads to issues where we wrongly consider that two symbols having the same value are the same. Because we wrongly assume that they are all defined in the same .text section. This patch fixes this problem by translating the section-relative addresses we see in .symtab into binary-relative addresses by adding the address of the section to the section-relative address. Those binary-addresses can thus safely be compared to the binary-relative addresses we see in the DWARF. And also, when two symbols have the same binary-relative address, we can now safely assume that they are the same -- they are aliases, basically. * src/abg-dwarf-reader.cc (read_context::{lookup_native_elf_symbol_from_index, maybe_adjust_et_rel_sym_addr_to_abs_addr}): Define new member functions. (read_context::lookup_elf_symbol_from_index): Add a new overload. Write the old overloads in terms of the new one. (read_context::{load_symbol_maps_from_symtab_section, populate_symbol_map_from_ksymtab_reloc}): Use the new maybe_adjust_et_rel_sym_addr_to_abs_addr function to translate the symbol value/address into a binary-relative address before adding it to the addr->sym maps. Add compatibility layer for C++11 mode
Introduce a compatibility layer for C++11 code by adding include/abg-cxx-compat.h. abg-cxx-compat defines a new namespace abg_compat and defines abg_compat::hash abg_compat::shared_ptr abg_compat::weak_ptr abg_compat::dynamic_pointer_cast abg_compat::static_pointer_cast abg_compat::unordered_map abg_compat::unordered_set based on definitions from std::tr1 (std=gnu++98) or std:: (std=gnu++11). I decided for introducing abg_compat:: rather than polluting abigail:: to allow an easier transition to C++11 at a later time and to not subtly break existing code. abg-writer: Refactor write_corpus API
Introduce a new overload for write_corpus that follows the parameter order context, object (i.e. corpus), indent. Deprecate all other overloads that were part of the API and mostly forward them to the new overload. Bug 24378 - DW_TAG_subroutine_type as a DIE scope causes infinite loop
GCC 4.3.2 wrongly emits some type definition DIEs in the scope of a DW_TAG_subroutine_type. Whenever the DWARF reader tries to get the scope of a DIE during the computation of the pretty name of a type DIE which scope is (wrongly) emitted as being a DW_TAG_subroutine_type things end-up in an infinite loop. Bug 23044 - Assertions with side effects
There are lots of spots in libabigail's source code where the argument of the assert() call does have side effects. This is a problem because when the code is compiled with the NDEBUG macro defined, the assert call does nothing, so the side effects of its argument are then suppressed, changing the behaviour of the program. To handle this issue, this patch introduces the ABG_ASSERT macro which is a wrapper around the assert call that enable the use of side effects in its argument. The patch now uses that ABG_ASSERT macro instead of using the assert call directly. The patch also makes it so that the configure option accepts the --disable-assert option so that the user can build libabigail with the NDEBUG macro defined. Support having several debuginfo search dirs for a binary
There are use cases where the split debuginfo file of a given binary is under a given root directory and that the split debuginfo file itself depends on an alternate debuginfo file that is under another unrelated root directory. In that case, the dwarf reader must be able to look for the debuginfo files under several unrelated root directories. The tools abidiff and abidw must thus support having several occurences of the option --debug-info-dir1 (or --debug-info-dir2) meaning that the debuginfo files for the binary must be looked for under several root directories. Move test-read-dwarf.cc to abigail::workers
Moving this test away from using pthreads directly to use abigail::workers. This patch also updates the valgrind suppression file to suppress some Helgrind false positives. Those are due to: - libstdc++ apparently having some benign data races when emitting data to ostream. Drop suppressed ABI artifacts from the IR
This patch allows dropping suppressed ABI artifacts from the in-memory internal representation right during the DWARF or abixml reading. In practise, this means that abidw and abilint now have a --suppressions options to give them suppression specifications. If a suppression specification that has the "drop" property matches an ABI artifact (type, function or variable) then that artifact is dropped from the internal representation. This also applies to abidiff. Note that now, by default, ABI artifacts (types) that are suppressed due to the --headers-dir{1,2} option of abidiff are now also dropped from the IR as well. Support DW_TAG_type_unit
Type units sections are sections in which the compiler emits types uniquely identified by a signature. This is so that the linker can later discard redundant types (types having the same signature) from the debug info and thus reduce the overall size of debug info. These types are children DIEs of DW_TAG_type_unit. Because DIEs coming from that .debug_types section can have the same offset as DIEs coming from the .debug_info section, this patch defines a new DIE source to identify DIEs coming from .debug_types section. The name of that new source is the new TYPE_UNIT_DIE_SOURCE enumerator of the die_source enum. The patch also creates the necessary maps containing DIEs coming from this new source and adjusts the accompanying accessors accordingly. * src/abg-dwarf-reader.cc (TYPE_UNIT_DIE_SOURCE): New enumerator in enum die_source. Use worker threads pattern to speed up some tests
We are going to need to speed up more and more tests, and coding directly with libpthread for that can be tedious and bug-prone. That test was doing several sub-tests that amount to just calling abidw --abidiff. It appears that two different types from two different translation units might have the same name in a DSO, like in the example of this bug. This violates the One Definition Rule, which we rely on to go fast, and more importantly, it introduces type canonicalization errors. This patch recognizes more of these ODR violation cases by looking at the size of the types. Bug 19025 - abixml writer forgets to emit some member types
When a member type (a type that is a member of a class) M is referenced by some types emitted by abixml, but the context of M (the class type which M is a member of) is not itself referenced by any ABI artifact, then abixml forgets to emit the context of M and thus M itself. With this patch, when the abixml writer has emitted almost all ABI artifacts for the current translation unit, it looks for types that have been referenced by the emitted ABI artifacts, but that haven't been emitted themselves. In some debug info of some shared library, the same type can be present as a struct in some translation units, and as a class in others. As we are using the "pretty representation" of types to hash types during type canonicalization, a "class foo" and "struct foo" are (wrongly) considered different, because those pretty representations are different. Bug 19037 - Make ABI corpus support several functions with same symbol
It turns out that, in DWARF, there can be function template instantiations foo<int>(int) and foo<TypedefOfInt>(TypedefOfInt) which have the same symbol name, if TypedefOfInt is a typedef of int. An ABI corpus retains only one function declaration per symbol name. So in the example of the bug the input DWARF has the two instantiations, but libabigail is just keeping one of the two; so the abixml only has one of the two template instantiations. This patch changes the ABI corpus model so that it represents the fact that there can be several function declarations for a given symbol. The patch then adjust the comparison engine to make it know about this new model. * include/abg-corpus.h (corpus::exported_decls_builder::str_{fn,var}_ptr_map_type): Remove these typedefs from here as they only used internally in abg-corpus.cc. Introduce the concept of environment
There are resources needed by the type system and other artifacts of libabigail. Today, when the life time of those resources need to be greater than all of artifacts of Abigail, then said resources are made global. But then global resources are not great, if anything because they complicate the future use of the library in concurrent computing setups. As I was in the need to add one resource to be used by the type system, I decided to sit down and first overhaul how these long lived resources needed to be handled. And here comes the concept of "environment". An environment is a place where one can put resources that need to live longer than all the other artifacts of the Abigail system. And so, the code that creates Abigail artifacts needs and environment of for said artifacts to use. In other words, artifacts now use an environment. This has interesting and strong implications. We can only compare two artifacts if they use the same environment. This is quite a strong requirement. But then when this requirement is fulfilled, comparing two types amounts to just comparing two pointer values; hash values for types can also be cached. Now *that* is great for speed of comparison, is it not? This patch introduce the concept environment (which is basically a new abigail::ir::environment type), removes the global variables and uses the environment instead. Each ABI artifact (either type or decl) now has a ::get_environment() member function to get its environment. This patch also disables the caching of hash values because the caching must happen only *after* all types have been canonicalized. We were not respecting that requirement until now, and that introduces wrong hash values. A subsequent patch is going to re-introduce hash value caching again, once the infrastructure is in place to set a flag in the environment (hah!) once type canonicalization is done, and then later read that flag when some client code requests a hash value, to know if we should look in the hash value cache or not. The patch obviously changes the output of numerous regression tests (if anything b/c it disables hash value caching) so 'make check' yields regressions. But then, it's only the subsequent patch that updates the tests. * include/abg-ir.h: Adjust note about memory management. (class environment): Declare new class. (translation_unit::translation_unit): Take an environment in parameter. (translation_unit::{g,s}et_environment): Declare new member functions. (type_or_decl_base::{g,s}et_environment): Likewise. (type_or_decl_base::{get_cached_hash_value, set_cached_hash_value}): Change the name of decl_base::peek_hash_value() and decl_base::set_hash() here into these and move them here. More type degradation fixes (from DWARF to abixml)
The series of fixes to make "abidw foo > foo.abi && abidiff foo foo.abi" work continues. On a binary submitted as part of bug 18904, I am still seeing type degradation. This patch addresses the different cases of degradation that are happening. * include/abg-fwd.h (get_type_scope): Declare new function. * src/abg-hash.cc (var_decl:#️⃣:operator()): Do not cache the hash because that can alter the hash computing of a larger type which embeds a var decl as a member declaration. This is especially true if the var decl indirectly references the larger type. The only way to cache the value of a var decl would be to wait after all canonical types have been computed. We'd then seal all types. After that sealing happens, we can cache var decls starting from the top-level ones. (function_decl:#️⃣:operator()): Likewise. * src/abg-ir.cc (get_type_scope): Define new functions. * src/abg-reader.cc (read_is_declaration_only): Declare this function earlier. (typedef const_types_map_it): Adjust this to make it point to a map of string and vector of types, as opposed to a map to string and type as it was before. (typedef types_map_it): New typedef. (read_context::map_id_and_node): Map a type id to the last xmlNodePtr that represent a *declaration*. That gives more leeway to the declaration resolution code to choose the right definition later. Otherwise, there are cases where the wrong definition. By wrong definition, I mean a definition that is different from the one chosen by the DWARF reading code, for a given declaration. Basically for a given ABI corpus, a type declaration resolve to the first definition seen in the corpus. (read_context::get_all_type_decls): Define new member function. (read_context::types_equal): Use qualified names only if both types have a scope. (read_context::key_type_decl): Now a given ID is associated to *all* the declarations and definition that have that ID. (read_translation_unit_from_input): Make sure the current corpus node points to the right node. (build_class_decl): Resolve class declarations to the first definition seen in the corpus. Key a type decl before reading its members as a reading a member can request the current decl. Bug 18892 - type degradation from DWARF to abixml on libtsan.so
abidiff-ing libtsan.so again the output of abidw libtsan.so does not yield the empty set. This is because some types, especially an enum (in certain cases) when read (de-serialized) from DWARF doesn't hash the same as when de-serialized from abixml. This is because an enum type can have a linkage name, referred to by the DW_AT_linkage_name DWARF attribute. This linkage_name was being read from DWARF but wasn't serialized to abixml. At de-serialization time, well, the linkage_name information was lost. Oops. Also, I have seen that in some case we can canonicalize enum types too early, when we de-serialize them from abixml, before we are done building them. This patch addresses these issues. * src/abg-reader.cc (read_context::maybe_canonicalize_type): Late canonicalize enum types. Bug 18893 - type degradation from dwarf to abixml on libGLU.so
abidiff-ing libGLU.so against the result of 'abidw libGLU.so' does not yield the empty set. This is because hashing certain types when they are read (de-serialized) from DWARF doesn't give the same result as when they are de-serialized from abixml. I call this type degradation. And it leads to spurious comparison differences. This is due to several issues. 1/ The logical link between a class declaration and its definition -- that is built when reading types from DWARF is not preserved in abixml. So, for example, when a class S refers to itself via a pointer to its declaration, that type might hash differently when read from DWARF and when read from abixml. When read from abixml it's a pointer to S itself. But then that 'self' can be a copy of S that is defined in another file because abixml doesn't enforce the One Definition Rule from C++ either. 2/ As the result of hashing is kept in a cache for var_decl and function_decl, hashing those decl before their types are completely built caches a value that becomes wrong when their type become completely built. 3/ In DWARF, a class which has a virtual member function can still be considered as being declaration-only. And its definition can come later in the DWARF info. Our DWARF reader removes the "declaration-only" flag from a class as soon as it sees virtual member functions in that class; that makes us consider that class as a definition. And then later when we read the real definition of the class we have two classes of the same name, with different layouts/size in the system. This leads to spurious comparison differences too. This patch addresses issues 1, 2 and 3. * src/abg-dwarf-reader.cc (build_class_type_and_add_to_ir): Do not consider that virtual member functions disqualify a class from being declaration-only. * src/abg-hash.cc (var_decl:#️⃣:operator()): Do not cache the result of hashing before we are done building the type of the var_decl. (function_decl:#️⃣:operator()): Likewise, do not cache the result of hashing before we are done building the type of the function_decl. * src/abg-reader.cc (build_class_decl): Build the link between a class declaration and its definition. If there are several definitions of a class in the corpus, keep just one. * src/abg-writer.cc (write_class_is_declaration_only): Emit the link between a class declaration and its definition. (write_class_decl): Emit a class declaration even if it has a definition.
