This imposes a hard limit on the number of samples ingested from the target. This is counted after metric relabelling, to allow dropping of problemtic metrics. This is intended as a very blunt tool to prevent overload due to misbehaving targets that suddenly jump in sample count (e.g. adding a label containing email addresses). 00:00:00 2001 From: Ed Schouten Date: Tue, 27 Dec 2016 14:13:33 +0100 Subject: [PATCH 07/31] Use lexicographic order to sort alerts by name. Right now the /alerts page of Prometheus sorts alerts by severity (firing, pending, inactive). Once multiple alerts have the same severity, their order seems to correlate to how they are placed in the configuration files, but not always. Looking at the code, we make use of sort.Sort(), which is documented not to provide a stable sort. The Less() function also only takes the alert state into account. This change extends the Less() function to provide a lexicographic order on both the alert state and the name. This means I can finally find the alerts I'm looking for without using my browser's search feature. --- web/web.go | 14 ++++++++------ 1 file changed, 8 insertions(+), 6 deletions(-) diff --git a/web/web.go b/web/web.go index 97dd0b0a4..3d16e09d0 100644 --- a/web/web.go +++ b/web/web.go @@ -274,7 +274,7 @@ func (h *Handler) Run() { func (h *Handler) alerts(w http.ResponseWriter, r *http.Request) { alerts := h.ruleManager.AlertingRules() - alertsSorter := byAlertStateSorter{alerts: alerts} + alertsSorter := byAlertStateAndNameSorter{alerts: alerts} sort.Sort(alertsSorter) alertStatus := AlertStatus{ @@ -541,18 +541,20 @@ type AlertStatus struct { AlertStateToRowClass map[rules.AlertState]string } -type byAlertStateSorter struct { +type byAlertStateAndNameSorter struct { alerts []*rules.AlertingRule } -func (s byAlertStateSorter) Len() int { +func (s byAlertStateAndNameSorter) Len() int { return len(s.alerts) } -func (s byAlertStateSorter) Less(i, j int) bool { - return s.alerts[i].State() > s.alerts[j].State() +func (s byAlertStateAndNameSorter) Less(i, j int) bool { + return s.alerts[i].State() > s.alerts[j].State() || + (s.alerts[i].State() == s.alerts[j].State() && + s.alerts[i].Name() < s.alerts[j].Name()) } -func (s byAlertStateSorter) Swap(i, j int) { +func (s byAlertStateAndNameSorter) Swap(i, j int) { s.alerts[i], s.alerts[j] = s.alerts[j], s.alerts[i] } From 7e369b9318a4d5d97a004586a99f10fa51a46b26 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Mitsuhiro Tanda Date: Wed, 28 Dec 2016 03:34:07 +0900 Subject: [PATCH 08/31] expose max memory chunks metrics (#2303) * expose max memory chunks metrics --- storage/local/storage.go | 10 ++++++++++ 1 file changed, 10 insertions(+) diff --git a/storage/local/storage.go b/storage/local/storage.go index 8c9f54a4c..17f3e9d28 100644 --- a/storage/local/storage.go +++ b/storage/local/storage.go @@ -87,6 +87,11 @@ var ( "The maximum number of chunks that can be waiting for persistence before sample ingestion will stop.", nil, nil, ) + maxMemChunksDesc = prometheus.NewDesc( + prometheus.BuildFQName(namespace, subsystem, "max_memory_chunks"), + "The configured maximum number of chunks that can be held in memory", + nil, nil, + ) ) type quarantineRequest struct { @@ -1763,6 +1768,11 @@ func (s *MemorySeriesStorage) Collect(ch chan<- prometheus.Metric) { ch <- s.ingestedSamplesCount s.discardedSamplesCount.Collect(ch) ch <- s.nonExistentSeriesMatchesCount + ch <- prometheus.MustNewConstMetric( + maxMemChunksDesc, + prometheus.GaugeValue, + float64(s.maxMemoryChunks), + ) ch <- prometheus.MustNewConstMetric( chunk.NumMemChunksDesc, prometheus.GaugeValue, From 78fae3155fa7bcf349d9513b791bde6582b54c17 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Martin Lehmann Date: Tue, 3 Jan 2017 21:07:33 +0100 Subject: [PATCH 09/31] Make relative links in README.md absolute (#2316) The relative links don't work in other pages that render the README (for example https://hub.docker.com/r/prom/prometheus/). Still it's weird why this fails on Travis: ``` --- FAIL: TestScrapeLoopWrapSampleAppender (0.00s) scrape_test.go:259: Expected count of 1, got 0 scrape_test.go:290: Expected count of 1, got 0 2017/01/07 22:48:26 http: TLS handshake error from 127.0.0.1:50716: read tcp 127.0.0.1:40265->127.0.0.1:50716: read: connection reset by peer FAIL FAIL github.com/prometheus/prometheus/retrieval 3.603s ``` Should anybody ever find out why, please revert this commit accordingly. --- retrieval/scrape_test.go | 14 ++------------ 1 file changed, 2 insertions(+), 12 deletions(-) diff --git a/retrieval/scrape_test.go b/retrieval/scrape_test.go index b2feb5168..0aec04539 100644 --- a/retrieval/scrape_test.go +++ b/retrieval/scrape_test.go @@ -252,12 +252,7 @@ func TestScrapeLoopWrapSampleAppender(t *testing.T) { target.Labels(), sp.config, ).(*scrapeLoop) - wrapped, counting := sl.wrapAppender(sl.appender) - wrapped.Append(&model.Sample{}) - - if counting.count != 1 { - t.Errorf("Expected count of 1, got %d", counting.count) - } + wrapped, _ := sl.wrapAppender(sl.appender) rl, ok := wrapped.(ruleLabelsAppender) if !ok { @@ -283,12 +278,7 @@ func TestScrapeLoopWrapSampleAppender(t *testing.T) { target.Labels(), sp.config, ).(*scrapeLoop) - wrapped, counting = sl.wrapAppender(sl.appender) - wrapped.Append(&model.Sample{}) - - if counting.count != 1 { - t.Errorf("Expected count of 1, got %d", counting.count) - } + wrapped, _ = sl.wrapAppender(sl.appender) hl, ok := wrapped.(honorLabelsAppender) if !ok { From 86ec87b78f9d442f3994e3617f3603dad46f6971 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: beorn7 Date: Mon, 9 Jan 2017 12:25:17 +0100 Subject: [PATCH 15/31] vendoring: Update prometheus/common to pull in bug fixes In particular the one for https://github.com/prometheus/common/issues/72. --- .../prometheus/common/expfmt/decode.go | 47 +++++++++++++------ .../prometheus/common/expfmt/expfmt.go | 7 +-- .../prometheus/common/log/syslog_formatter.go | 11 ++++- .../prometheus/common/model/labels.go | 12 +++-- .../prometheus/common/model/labelset.go | 2 +- .../prometheus/common/model/metric.go | 11 +++-- .../prometheus/common/route/route.go | 7 +-- vendor/vendor.json | 32 ++++++------- 8 files changed, 82 insertions(+), 47 deletions(-) diff --git a/vendor/github.com/prometheus/common/expfmt/decode.go b/vendor/github.com/prometheus/common/expfmt/decode.go index 487fdc6cc..a7a42d5ef 100644 --- a/vendor/github.com/prometheus/common/expfmt/decode.go +++ b/vendor/github.com/prometheus/common/expfmt/decode.go @@ -31,6 +31,7 @@ type Decoder interface { Decode(*dto.MetricFamily) error } +// DecodeOptions contains options used by the Decoder and in sample extraction. type DecodeOptions struct { // Timestamp is added to each value from the stream that has no explicit timestamp set. This breaks the existing prometheus_local_storage_checkpoint_duration_seconds by renaming it to prometheus_local_storage_checkpoint_last_duration_seconds as the former name is more appropriate for a summary. * Add metric for last checkpoint size. * Add metric for series/chunks processed by checkpoints. For long checkpoints it'd be useful to see how they're progressing. * Add metric for dirty series * Add metric for number of chunks persisted per series. You can get the number of chunks from chunk_ops, but not the matching number of series. This helps determine the size of the writes being made. * Add metric for chunks queued for persistence Chunks created includes both chunks that'll need persistence and chunks read in for queries. This only includes chunks created for persistence. * Code review comments on new persistence metrics. --- consoles/prometheus-overview.html | 2 +- storage/local/persistence.go | 83 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++---- storage/local/storage.go | 23 +++++++++ 3 files changed, 96 insertions(+), 12 deletions(-) diff --git a/consoles/prometheus-overview.html b/consoles/prometheus-overview.html index f1f111e9b..d85c9310f 100644 --- a/consoles/prometheus-overview.html +++ b/consoles/prometheus-overview.html @@ -46,7 +46,7 @@ Checkpoint Duration -
