wm4 719a435d36 demux: add a back buffer and the ability to seek into it
This improves upon the previous commit, and partially rewrites it (and
other code). It does:

- disable the seeking within cache by default, and add an option to
  control it
- mess with the buffer estimation reporting code, which will most likely
  lead to funny regressions even if the new features are not enabled
- add a back buffer to the packet cache
- enhance the seek code so you can seek into the back buffer
- unnecessarily change a bunch of other stuff for no reason
- fuck up everything and vomit ponies and rainbows

This should actually be pretty usable. One thing we should add are some
properties to report the proper buffer state. Then the OSC could show a
nice buffer range. Also configuration of the buffers could be made
simpler. Once this has been tested enough, it can be enabled by default,
and might replace the stream cache's byte ringbuffer.

In addition it may or may not be possible to keep other buffer ranges
when seeking outside of the current range, but that would be much more
complex.

wm4 044af63d98 demux: improvements to previous commits
More the ignore_eof field to the internal demux_stream struct. This is
relatively messy, because the internal struct exists only once the
stream is created, and after that setting the ignore_eof flag is a race
condition. We could bother with adding demux_add_sh_stream() parameters
for this, but let's not. So in theory a tiny race condition is
introduced, which can never be triggered since all demux API functions
are called by the playback thread only anyway.

Fix that ts_offset is accessed without log (this was introduced much
earlier by myself).

Introduce an alternative way of avoiding the annoying EOF reached
messages by not resetting the EOF flags for CC streams when a CC packet
is added. This makes the second commit in the PR which added the
original fix unnecessary.

As another cosmetic change merge the check in cached_demux_control()
into a single if().

In the future, the CC pseudo-stream should probably be replaced with an
entire pseudo-demuxer or such, which would avoid some of the messiness
(or maybe not, we don't know yet).

wm4 3fff6bc5f2 demux: change license to LGPL
As usual, the history of these files is a bit murky. It starts with the
initial commit. (At which some development had already been done,
according to the AUTHORS and ChangeLog files at the time, we should be
but covered with relicensing agreements, though.) then it goes on with
complete lack of modularization, which was cleaned up later (cd68e161).
As usual, we don't consider the copyright of the stuff that has been
moved out cleanly.

There were also contributions to generic code by people who could not be
reached or who did not agree to the relicensing, but this was all
removed.

The only patches that we could not relicense and which were still in the
current code in some form are from Dénes Balatoni: 422b0d2a, 32937181.
We could not reach him, so commits f34e1a0d and 18905298 remove his
additions. It still leaves the demux_control() declaration itself, but
we don't consider it copyrightable. It's basically an idiom that existed
in MPlayer before that change, applied to the demuxer struct. (We even
went as far as making sure to remove all DEMUXER_CTRLs the original
author added.)

Commit be54f481 might be a bit of a corner case, but this was rewritten,
and we consider the old copyright removed long ago.

wm4 1890529857 demux: get rid of DEMUXER_CTRL_GET_TIME_LENGTH
Similar purpose as f34e1a0dee.

Somehow this is much more natural too, and needs less code.

This breaks runtime updates to duration. This could easily be fixed, but
no important demuxer does this anyway. Only demux_raw and demux_disc
might (the latter for BD/DVD). For the latter it might actually have
some importance when changing titles at runtime (I guess?), but guess
what, I don't care.

wm4 f34e1a0dee demux: replace custom return codes with CONTROL_ ones
This is more uniform, and potentially gets rid of some past copyrights.

It might be that this subtly changes caching behavior (it seems before
this, it synced to the demuxer if the length was unknown, which is not
what we want.)

wm4 3709ce6718 demux: estimate total packet size, deprecate packet number limits
It's all explained in the DOCS changes. Although this option was always
kind of obscure and pointless. Until it is removed, the only reason for
setting it would be to raise the static default limit, so change its
default to INT_MAX so that it does nothing by default.

wm4 58c9f1a822 demux: try not to read packets when cancelled
Essentially, this will make it abort sooner. Especially with DASH it
might avoid confusing error messages, although exact behavior depends
on timing.

wm4 95d4c2d7f6 player: different way to auto-enable the demuxer cache
Instead of enabling it only when a stream-cache is enabled, also try to
enable it independently from that if the demuxer is marked as
is_network.

Also add some code to the EDL code, so EDLs containing network streams
are automatically cached this way.

Extend the OSD info line so that it shows the demuxer cache in this case
(more or less).

I didn't find where or whether options.rst describes how the demuxer
cache is enabled, so no changes there.

wm4 e13a62fc34 stream: better method signal caching, rename weird uncached_stream field
"uncached_stream" is a pretty bad name. It could be mistaken for a
boolean, and then its meaning would be inverted. Rename it.

Also add a "caching" field, which signals that the stream is a cache or
reads from a cache. This is easier to understand and more flexible.

wm4 73858bb0cc player: remove --stream-capture option/property
This was excessively useless, and I want my time back that was needed to
explain users why they don't want to use it.

It captured the byte stream only, and even for types of streams it was
designed for (like transport streams), it was rather questionable.

As part of the removal, un-inline demux_run_on_thread() (which has only
1 call-site now), and sort of reimplement --stream-dump to write the
data directly instead of using the removed capture code.

(--stream-dump is also very useless, and I struggled coming up with an
explanation for it in the manpage.)

wm4 880bf54d7e player: actually let cache readahead after opening demuxer for prefetch
Disabling cache readahead by default until at least 1 track is selected
is mainly for external files and such, where you don't want them to use
up resources until they're actually used.

It doesn't make sense to disable the cache for the demuxer opened for
prefetch. Also, it's fine to let it do that for the main file too (doing
or not doing it is of little consequence). That saves us from having to
distinguish them.

wm4 4e25feda0d player: change aspects of cover art handling
Cover art handling is a disgusting hack that causes a mess in all
components. And this will stay this way. This is the Xth time I've
changed cover art handling, and that will probably also continue.

But change the code such that cover art is injected into the demux
packet stream, instead of having an explicit special case it in the
decoder glue code. (This is somewhat more similar to the cover art hack
in libavformat.)

To avoid that the over art picture is decoded again on each seek, we
need some additional "caching" in player/video.c. Decoding it after each
seek would work as well, but since cover art pictures can be pretty
huge, it's probably ok to invest some lines of code into caching it.

One weird thing is that the cover art packet will remain queued after
seeks, but that is probably not an issue.

In exchange, we can drop the dec_video.c code, which is pretty
convenient for one of the following commits. This code duplicates a
bunch of lower-level decode calls and does icky messing with this weird
state stuff, so I'm glad it goes away.

wm4 5838322975 demux: improve buffer estimation in a corner case
This deals with the estimation of buffered packets, which is used mostly
for display, but also things like pausing on low buffer levels.

If a stream is fully EOF (no more packets), we don't want to include it
in the total buffer amount. This also means we should make ds->eof less
flaky and more stable, so don't reset it in ds_get_packets() (this
function reset ds->eof just to retrigger a packet read attempt - we can
have this slightly simpler). This somewhat fixes buffering display when
e.g. issuing a refresh seek after re-enabling audio/video when playing
with subtitles only.

wm4 88f10ec84f player: fix instant subtitle refresh on track switches
When switching a subtitle track, the subtitle wasn't necessarily
updated, especially when playback was paused.

Some awfully subtle and complex interactions here.

First off (and not so subtle), the subtitle decoder will read packets
only on explicit update_subtitles() calls, which, if video is active, is
called only when a new video frame is shown. (A simply video frame
redraw doesn't trigger this.) So call it explicitly. But only if
playback is "initialized", i.e. not when it does initial track selection
and decoder init, during which no packets should be read.

The second issue is that the demuxer thread simply will not read new
packets just because a track was switched, especially if playback is
paused. That's fine, but if a refresh seek is to be done, it really
should do this. So if there's either 1. a refresh seek requested, or 2.
a refresh seek ongoing, then read more packets.

Note that it's entirely possible that we overflow the packet queue with
this in unpredicated weird corner cases, but the queue limit will still
be enforced, so this shouldn't make the situation worse.

wm4 d4d8b3a4fc demux: do not access global options
Don't access MPOpts directly, and always use the new m_config.h
functions for accessing them in a thread-safe way.

The goal is eventually removing the mpv_global.opts field, and the
demuxer/stream-layer specific hack that copies MPOpts to deal with
thread-safety issues.

This moves around a lot of options. For one, we often change the
physical storage location of options to make them more localized,
but these changes are not user-visible (or should not be). For
shared options on the other hand it's better to do messy direct
access, which is worrying as in that somehow renaming an option
or changing its type would break code reading them manually,
without causing a compilation error.

wm4 bc97d60542 demux: close underlying stream if it's fully read anyway
This is for text subtitles. libavformat currently always reads text
subtitles completely on init. This means the underlying stream is
useless and will consume resources for various reasons (network
connection, file handles, cache memory).

Take care of this by closing the underlying stream if we think the
demuxer has read everything. Since libavformat doesn't export whether it
did (or whether it may access the stream again in the future), we rely
on a whitelist. Also, instead of setting the stream to NULL or so, set
it to an empty dummy stream. This way we don't have to litter the code
with NULL checks.

demux_lavf.c needs extra changes, because it tries to do clever things
for the sake of subtitle charset conversion.

The main reason we keep the demuxer etc. open is because we fell for
libavformat being so generic, and we tried to remove corresponding
special-cases in the higher-level player code. Some of this is forced
due to ass/srt mkv/mp4 demuxing being very similar to external text
files. In the future it might be better to do this in a more
straight-forward way, such as reading text subtitles into libass and
then discarding the demuxer entirely, but for aforementioned reasons
this could be more of a mess than the solution introduced by this
commit.

Probably fixes #3456.

wm4 4121016689 player: don't directly access demuxer->stream
Cleaner and makes it easier to change the underlying stream.

mp_property_stream_capture() still directly accesses it directly via
demux_run_on_thread(). This is evil, but still somewhat sane and is not
getting into the way here.

Not sure if I got all field accesses.

wm4 74d4073771 demux: demote packet queue overflow to a warning
It doesn't necessarily have to mean anything bad.

We're still too lazy to provide any more detailed information (e.g.
whether this happened to likely bad interleaving, excessive amount of
packets like with some ASS subs, or that the readahead user option is
limitted by the packet queue size).

wm4 12e251c29e demux: fix undefined behavior with ogg metadata update
When an ogg track upodates metadata, we have to perform a complicated
runtime update due to the demux.c architecture. A detail was broken and
an array was allocated with the previous number of streams, which
usually led to invalid memory write accesses at least on the first
update.

wm4 b9ba9a898a demux: add per-track metadata
...and ignore it. The main purpose is for retrieving per-track
replaygain tags. Other than that per-track tags are not used or accessed
by the playback core yet.

The demuxer infrastructure is still not really good with that whole
synchronization thing (at least in part due to being inherited from
mplayer's single-threaded architecture). A convoluted mechanism is
needed to transport the tags from demuxer thread to user thread. Two
factors contribute to the complexity: tags can change during playback,
and tracks (i.e. struct sh_stream) are not duplicated per thread.

In particular, we update the way replaygain tags are retrieved. We first
try to use per-track tags (common in Matroska) and global tags
(effectively formats like mp3). This part fixes #3405.

wm4 78bcbe289e demux: make refresh seek handling more generic
Remove the explicit whitelisting of formats for refresh seeks. Instead,
check whether the packet position is somewhat reliable during demuxing.
If there are packets without position, or the packet position is not
monotonically increasing, then do not use them for refresh seeks.

This does not make sure of some requirements, such as deterministic
seeks. If that happens, mpv will mess up a bit on stream switching.

Also, add another method that uses DTS to identify packets, and prefer
it to the packet position method. Even if there's a demuxer which
randomizes packet positions, it hardly can do that with DTS. The DTS
method is not always available either, though. Some formats do not have
a DTS, and others are not always strictly monotonic (possibly due to
libavformat codec parsing and timestamp determination issues).

wm4 7fd3dbcd52 demux: fix a minor race condition
If the packet read function returns, and EOF was detected, and a seek
was issued in the meantime, then don't use the EOF result. The seek will
be processed later, and reset the EOF state anyway.

The main effect is probably that we don't return EOF to the decoders
(which the playback core resets before issuing the seek), and that we
won't log an EOF message.

Not important, but slightly more correct.

wm4 d41f0a54b0 player: improve instant track switching
When switching tracks, we normally have the problem that data gets lost
due to readahead buffering. (Which in turn is because we're stubborn and
instruct the demuxers to discard data on unselected streams.) The
demuxer layer has a hack that re-reads discarded buffered data if a
stream is enabled mid-stream, so track switching will seem instant.

A somewhat similar problem is when all tracks of an external files were
disabled - when enabling the first track, we have to seek to the target
position.

Handle these with the same mechanism. Pass the "current time" to the
demuxer's stream switch function, and let the demuxer figure out what to
do. The demuxer will issue a refresh seek (if possible) to update the
new stream, or will issue a "normal" seek if there was no active stream
yet.

One case that changes is when a video/audio stream is enabled on an
external file with only a subtitle stream active, and the demuxer does
not support rrefresh seeks. This is a fuzzy case, because subtitles are
sparse, and the demuxer might have skipped large amounts of data. We
used to seek (and send the subtitle decoder some subtitle packets
twice). This case is sort of obscure and insane, and the fix would be
questionable, so we simply don't care.

Should mostly fix #3392.

wm4 57506b27ed cache: use a single STREAM_CTRL for various cache info
Instead of having a separate for each, which also requires separate
additional caching in the demuxer. (The demuxer adds an indirection,
since STREAM_CTRLs are not thread-safe.)

Since this includes the cache speed, this should fix #3003.

wm4 d8b27ee4de demux: remove pausing mechanism
This is simpler, because it doesn't have to wait from both threads for
synchronization.

Apart from being simpler/cleaner, this serves vague plans to stop/start
the demuxer thread itself automatically on demand (for the purpose of
reducing unneeded resource usage).

wm4 953ff6b390 demux: replace demux_pause/demux_unpause with demux_run_on_thread
This pause stuff is bothersome and is needed only for a few corner-
cases. This commit removes it from the demuxer public API and replaces
it with a demux_run_on_thread() function and refactors the code which
needed demux_pause(). The next commit will change the implementation.

wm4 5c1fe2a4f3 demux: delay bitrate calculation on packets with unknown timestamps
Commit 503c6f7f essentially removed timestamps from "laces" (Block sub-
divisions), which means many audio packets will have no timestamp.
There's no reason why bitrate calculation can't just delayed to a point
when the next timestamp is known.

Fixes #2903 (no audio bitrate with mkv files).

wm4 92ba630796 demux: remove relative seeking
Ever since a change in mplayer2 or so, relative seeks were translated to
absolute seeks before sending them to the demuxer in most cases. The
only exception in current mpv is DVD seeking.

Remove the SEEK_ABSOLUTE flag; it's not the implied default. SEEK_FACTOR
is kept, because it's sometimes slightly useful for seeking in things
like transport streams. (And maybe mkv files without duration set?)

DVD seeking is terrible because DVD and libdvdnav are terrible, but
mostly because libdvdnav is terrible. libdvdnav does not expose seeking
with seek tables. (Although I know xbmc/kodi use an undocumented API
that is not declared in the headers by dladdr()ing it - I think the
function is dvdnav_jump_to_sector_by_time().) With the current mpv
policy if not giving a shit about DVD, just revert our half-working seek
hacks and always use dvdnav_time_search(). Relative seeking might get
stuck sometimes; in this case --hr-seek=always is recommended.

wm4 b654aaea0a demux: avoid lost wakeup on queue overflow
If a stream is marked as EOF (due to no packets found in reach), then we
need to wakeup the decoder. This is important especially if no packets
are found at the start of the file, so the A/V sync logic actually
starts playback, instead of waiting for packets that will never come.
(It would randomly start playback when running the playback loop due to
arbitrary external events like user input.)

wm4 0af5335383 Rewrite ordered chapters and timeline stuff
This uses a different method to piece segments together. The old
approach basically changes to a new file (with a new start offset) any
time a segment ends. This meant waiting for audio/video end on segment
end, and then changing to the new segment all at once. It had a very
weird impact on the playback core, and some things (like truly gapless
segment transitions, or frame backstepping) just didn't work.

The new approach adds the demux_timeline pseudo-demuxer, which presents
an uniform packet stream from the many segments. This is pretty similar
to how ordered chapters are implemented everywhere else. It also reminds
of the FFmpeg concat pseudo-demuxer.

The "pure" version of this approach doesn't work though. Segments can
actually have different codec configurations (different extradata), and
subtitles are most likely broken too. (Subtitles have multiple corner
cases which break the pure stream-concatenation approach completely.)

To counter this, we do two things:
- Reinit the decoder with each segment. We go as far as allowing
  concatenating files with completely different codecs for the sake
  of EDL (which also uses the timeline infrastructure). A "lighter"
  approach would try to make use of decoder mechanism to update e.g.
  the extradata, but that seems fragile.
- Clip decoded data to segment boundaries. This is equivalent to
  normal playback core mechanisms like hr-seek, but now the playback
  core doesn't need to care about these things.

These two mechanisms are equivalent to what happened in the old
implementation, except they don't happen in the playback core anymore.
In other words, the playback core is completely relieved from timeline
implementation details. (Which honestly is exactly what I'm trying to
do here. I don't think ordered chapter behavior deserves improvement,
even if it's bad - but I want to get it out from the playback core.)

There is code duplication between audio and video decoder common code.
This is awful and could be shareable - but this will happen later.

Note that the audio path has some code to clip audio frames for the
purpose of codec preroll/gapless handling, but it's not shared as
sharing it would cause more pain than it would help.

wm4 46bcdb7039 demux: disable stream cache if no tracks are selected
Slightly helps with timeline stuff, like EDL. There is no need to keep
network (or even just disk I/O) busy for all segments at the same time,
because 1. the data won't be needed any time soon, and 2. will probably
be discarded anyway if the stream is seeked when segment is resumed.

Partially fixes #2692.

wm4 671df54e4d demux: merge sh_video/sh_audio/sh_sub
This is mainly a refactor. I'm hoping it will make some things easier
in the future due to cleanly separating codec metadata and stream
metadata.

Also, declare that the "codec" field can not be NULL anymore. demux.c
will set it to "" if it's NULL when added. This gets rid of a corner
case everything had to handle, but which rarely happened.

wm4 8135838018 player: eliminate demux_get_next_pts()
This slightly changes behavior when seeking with external audio/subtitle
tracks if transport streams and mpeg files are played, as well as
behavior when seeking with such external tracks.

get_main_demux_pts() is evil because it always blocks on the demuxer (if
there isn't already a packet queued). Thus it could lock up the player,
which is a shame because all other possible causes have been removed.

The reduced "precision" when seeking in the ts/mpeg cases (where
SEEK_FACTOR is used, resulting in byte seeks instead of timestamp seeks)
might lead to issues. We should probably drop this heuristic. (It was
introduced because there is no other way to seek in files with PTS
resets with libavformat, but its value is still questionable.)

Switch to demux_read_packet_async(), and let the player "wait properly"
until required subtitle packets arrive, instead of blocking everything.
Move distinguishing the cases of passive and active reading into the
demuxer, where it belongs.

wm4 f9ba1a3ddf demux: remove weird tripple-buffering for the sh_stream list
The demuxer infrastructure was originally single-threaded. To make it
suitable for multithreading (specifically, demuxing and decoding on
separate threads), some sort of tripple-buffering was introduced. There
are separate "struct demuxer" allocations. The demuxer thread sets the
state on d_thread. If anything changes, the state is copied to d_buffer
(the copy is protected by a lock), and the decoder thread is notified.
Then the decoder thread copies the state from d_buffer to d_user (again
while holding a lock). This avoids the need for locking in the
demuxer/decoder code itself (only demux.c needs an internal, "invisible"
lock.)

Remove the streams/num_streams fields from this tripple-buffering
schema. Move them to the internal struct, and protect them with the
internal lock. Use accessors for read access outside of demux.c.

Other than replacing all field accesses with accessors, this separates
allocating and adding sh_streams. This is needed to avoid race
conditions. Before this change, this was awkwardly handled by first
initializing the sh_stream, and then sending a stream change event. Now
the stream is allocated, then initialized, and then declared as
immutable and added (at which point it becomes visible to the decoder
thread immediately).

This change is useful for PR #2626. And eventually, we should probably
get entirely of the tripple buffering, and this makes a nice first step.

wm4 a6521f3941 demux: remove old subtitle parser
All of these are supported by FFmpeg now. It was disabled by default
too (with FFmpeg).

If compiled against Libav, mpv will lose the ability to read some
subtitle formats (but the most important ones, srt and ass, still should
work).

wm4 70df1608d6 player: handle rebasing start time differently
Most of this is explained in the DOCS additions.

This gives us slightly more sanity, because there is less interaction
between the various parts. The goal is getting rid of the video_offset
entirely.

The simplification extends to the user API. In particular, we don't need
to fix missing parts in the API, such as the lack for a seek command
that seeks relatively to the start time. All these things are now
transparent.

(If someone really wants to know the real timestamps/start time, new
properties would have to be added.)

wm4 384b13c5fd demux_libass: remove this demuxer
This loaded external .ass files via libass. libavformat's .ass reader is
now good enough, so use that instead.

Apparently libavformat still doesn't support fonts embedded into text
.ass files, but support for this has been accidentally broken in mpv for
a while anyway. (And only 1 person complained.)

wm4 2b280f4522 stream: libarchive wrapper for reading compressed archives
This works similar to the existing .rar support, but uses libarchive.
libarchive supports a number of formats, including zip and (most of)
rar.

Unfortunately, seeking does not work too well. Most libarchive readers
do not support seeking, so it's emulated by skipping data until the
target position. On backwards seek, the file is reopened. This works
fine on a local machine (and if the file is not too large), but will
perform not so well over network connection.

This is disabled by default for now. One reason is that we try
libarchive on every file we open, before trying libavformat, and I'm not
sure if I trust libarchive that much yet. Another reason is that this
breaks multivolume rar support. While libarchive supports seeking in
rar, and (probably) supports multivolume archive, our support of
libarchive (probably) does not. I don't care about multivolume rar, but
vocal users do.

wm4 828881816a demux: remove redundant demux_chapter.name field
Instead, force everyone to use the metadata struct and set a "title"
field. This is only a problem for the timeline producers, which set up
chapters manually. (They do this because a timeline is a separate
struct.)

This fixes the behavior of the chapter-metadata property, which never
returned a "title" property for e.g. ordered chapters.

wm4 beb4f8316a demux: add options to control maximum queue size
Add --demuxer-max-packets and --demuxer-max-bytes, which control the
maximum size of the packet queue. These can be helpful to avoid
excessive memory usage.

Memory usage is the reason why there's a limit in the first place. If a
file is more or less broken, and audio and video don't line up, the
decoders will fill up the packet queue trying to read more audio or
video, and the maximum sizes are required to avoid unbounded memory
allocation. Being able to override the maximum sizes is useful; either
for restricting memory usage further, or enlarging the sizes when
attempting to play various broken files.

Remove --demuxer-readahead-packets and --demuxer-readahead-bytes. These
were a bit useless. They could force a minimum packet queue size, but
controlling the queue size with --demuxer-readahead-secs is much nicer.

It's fairly certain nobody ever used these options.

wm4 75b1d5043f player: use demux_open_url() to open main files
Instead of opening a stream and then a demuxer, do both at once with
demux_open_url().

This requires some awkward additions to demuxer_params, because there
are some weird features associated with opening the main file. E.g. the
relatively useless --stream-capture features requires enabling capturing
on the stream before the demuxer is opened, but on the other hand
shouldn't be done on secondary files like external subtitles.

Also relatively bad: since demux_open_url() returns just a demuxer
pointer or NULL, additional error reporting is done via demuxer_params.

Still, at least conceptually, it's ok, and simpler than before.

wm4 f792f56440 player: remove higher-level remains of DVD/BD menu support
Nobody wanted to restore this, so it gets the boot.

If anyone still wants to volunteer to restore menu support, this would
be welcome. (I might even try it myself if I feel masochistic and like
wasting a lot of time for nothing.) But if it does get restored, it
should be done differently. There were many stupid things about how it
was done. For example, it somehow tried to pull mp_nav_events through
all the layers (including needing to "buffer" them in the demuxer),
which was needlessly complicated. It could be done simpler.

This code was already inactive, so this commit actually changes nothing.
Also keep in mind that normal DVD/BD playback still works.

wm4 23220db924 player: disable seeking even if the cache is enabled
Until now, if a stream wasn't seekable, but the stream cache was enabled
(--cache), we've enabled seeking anyway. The idea was that at least
short seeks would typically fall within the cache. And if not, the user
was out of luck and terrible things happened. In other words, it was
unreliable.

Be stricter about it and remove this behavior. Effectively, this will
for example disable seeking in piped data.

Instead of trying to be clever, add an --force-seekable option, which
will always enable seeking if the user really wants it.

wm4 debf57bb0d demux: report correct cache state close to EOF
On EOF, this stopped reporting the actual cache duration, and just
signalled unknown duration. Fix this and keep reporting whatever is left
in the packet queue.

This reverts commit 5438a8b3. The commit doesn't give a good explanation
as to why it is needed, but I guess it was because the reporting was
imperfect (it switched between unknown or 0, and the correct duration).

This also removes a line added in commit 848546f2. The line is

    ds->active = false;

The "active" flag basically says that data from this stream is actively
needed, and it's used to calculate the minimum data that can actually be
played (approximately). If this were ignored, a sparse subtitle stream
would set the cache duration to 0s. The commit message adding the line
says "actually does nothing, but in theory it's cleaner". Well, screw
it.

wm4 1ad4a62336 demux: fix rar support for files containing DTS audio tracks
With a recent cleanup, rar support was stuffed into demux_playlist.c
(because "opening" rar files pretty much just lists archive contents and
adds them to a playlist using a special rar:// protocol, which will
actually access the rar file contents).

Since demux_playlist.c is probed _after_ demux_lavf.c (and should/must
be), libavformat was given the chance to detect DTS streams embedded
within the rar file. This is not really what we want, and a regression
what happened before rar listing was moved to demux_playlist.c.

Fix it by moving the rar listing into its own pseudo-demuxer, and let ir
probe before demux_lavf.c.

(Yes, this feature still has users.)

wm4 fa9b587426 demux, matroska: remove demuxer type field
The Matroska timeline code was the only thing which still used the
demuxer.type field. This field explicitly identifies a demuxer
implementation. The purpose of the Matroska timeline code was to reject
files that are not Matroska. But it already forces the Matroska format,
meaning loading will explicitly only use the Matroska demuxer. If the
demuxer can't open the file, no other demuxer will be tried, and thus
checking the field is redundant.

The change in demux_mkv_timeline.c removes the if condition, and
unindents the if body.

wm4 de0f3747ee demux: fix dropped subtitle packets with the new stream switching
If the previous subtitle packet is too far back, and the refresh seek
won't pick it up, and the packet never comes again. As a consequence,
the refresh mode was never stopped on the subtitle stream, which caused
all packets to be discarded.

Fix by assuming the file position is monotonically increasing; then it
will resume even if a packet _after_ the intended resume point is
returned. This introduces a new requirement on how the demuxer behaves.
(I'm not sure if mp4 actually satisfies this requirement in all cases.)

Fixes a regression introduced by commit f9f2e1cc.

wm4 f9f2e1cc4e demux: hack for instant stream switching
This removes the delay when switching audio tracks in mkv or mp4 files.
Other formats are not enabled, because it's not clear whether the
demuxers fulfill the requirements listed in demux.h. (Many formats
definitely do not with libavformat.)

Background:

The demuxer packet cache buffers a certain amount of packets. This
includes only packets from selected streams. We discard packets from
other streams for various reasons. This introduces a problem: switching
to a different audio track introduces a delay. The delay is as big as
the demuxer packet cache buffer, because while the file was read ahead
to fill the packet buffer, the process of reading packets also discarded
all packets from the previously not selected audio stream. Once the
remaining packet buffer has been played, new audio packets are available
and you hear audio again.

We could probably just not discard packets from unselected streams. But
this would require additional memory and CPU resources, and also it's
hard to tell when packets from unused streams should be discarded (we
don't want to keep them forever; it'd be a memory leak).

We could also issue a player hr-seek to the current playback position,
which would solve the problem in 1 line of code or so. But this can be
rather slow.

So what we do in this commit instead is: we just seek back to the
position where our current packet buffer starts, and start demuxing from
this position again. This way we can get the "past" packets for the
newly selected stream. For streams which were already selected the
packets are simply discarded until the previous position is reached
again.

That latter part is the hard part. We really want to skip packets
exactly until the position where we left off previously, or we will skip
packets or feed packets to the decoder twice. If we assume that the
demuxer is deterministic (returns exactly the same packets after a seek
to a previous position), then we can try to check whether it's the same
packet as the one at the end of the packet buffer. If it is, we know
that the packet after it is where we left off last time.

Unfortunately, this is not very robust, and maybe it can't be made
robust. Currently we use the demux_packet.pos field as unique packet
ID - which works fine in some scenarios, but will break in arbitrary
ways if the basic requirement to the demuxer (as listed in the demux.h
additions) are broken. Thus, this is enabled only for the internal mkv
demuxer and the libavformat mp4 demuxer.

(libavformat mkv does not work, because the packet positions are not
unique. Probably could be fixed upstream, but it's not clear whether
it's a bug or a feature.)

wm4 00b2611352 command: export more details about file seekability
If a file is unseekable (consider e.g. a http server without resume
functionality), but the stream cache is active, the player will enable
seeking anyway. Until know, client API user couldn't know that this
happens, and it has implications on how well seeking will work. So add a
property which exports whether this situation applies.

Fixes #1522.

wm4 966f0a41a4 demux_disc: pass seek flags to stream layer
Pass through the seek flags to the stream layer. The STREAM_CTRL
semantics become a bit awkward, but that's still the least awkward
part about optical disc media.

Make demux_disc.c request relative seeks. Now the player will use
relative seeks if the user sends relative seek commands, and the
demuxer announces it wants these by setting rel_seeks to true. This
change probably changes seek behavior for dvd, dvdnav, bluray, cdda,
and possibly makes seeking useless if the demuxer-cache is set to
a high value.

Will be used in the next commit. (Split to make reverting the next
commit easier.)

wm4 c8052da7de demux: return EOF when reading from unselected stream
Normally the player doesn't read from unselected streams, so this should
be a no-op. But unfortunately, some broken files can severely confuse
the player, and assign the same demuxer stream to multiple front-end
tracks. Then selecting one of the tracks would deselect the other track,
with the end result that the demuxer stream for the selected track is
deselected. This could happen with mkv files that use the same track
number (which is of course broken). timeline_set_part() sets the tracks
using demuxer_stream_by_demuxer_id(), using the broken non-unique IDs.

The observable effect was that the player never quit, because
demux_read_packet_async() told the caller to wait some longer for new
packets. Fix by returning EOF instead.

Fixes #1481.

This was completely breaking any low-level caching. Change it so that at
least demuxer caching will work.

Do this by using the metadata cache mechanism to funnel through the menu
commands.

For some incomprehensible reason, I had to reorder the events (which
affects their delivery priority), or they would be ignored. Probably
some crap about the event state being cleared before it could be
delivered. I don't give a shit.

All this code sucks. It would probably be better to let discnav.c access
the menu event "queue" directly, and to synchronize access with a mutex,
instead of going through all the caching layers, making things
complicated and slow.

wm4 09e08bfe2e demux: update cache state when paused
This was removed in commit 480f82fa. This caused the cache display not
to update while paused, because the update_cache() function is never
called in the thread (now I remember why the extra call was "needed").

The old implementation intentionally run update_cache() only before
waiting on a mutex, with no further checks for the condition variable.
In theory, this is strictly not sane, but since it was just for the
retrieval of the very fuzzy cache status, it was ok. Now we want to call
update_cache() outside of the mutex though - which means that in order
to avoid missed wakeups, a proper condition has to be used.

wm4 7c2c1dbe80 demux: fix PTS comparison
This was relying on the fact that timestamps will always be numerically
larger than MP_NOPTS_VALUE, but the trick didn't actually work for
MP_PTS_MIN. Be a bit more sincere, and don't rely on this anymore. This
fixes the comparison, and avoids the readahead amount displaying as
"???" in some situations (since one of the values was NOPTS).

In this case, we didn't find any new packets for this stream, even
though we've read ahead as much as possible. (If reading ahead in this
case, the "Too many packets in the demuxer packet queues" error is
normally printed.)

If we do consider this an underrun, handle_pause_on_low_cache() will
pause and show the "buffering" state, which is not useful.

Could also happen on very bad interleaving.

itself is rarely meaningful in any way.

For Matroska, there are some possible problems, depending how FFmpeg

wm4 9ba6641879 Set thread name for debugging
Especially with other components (libavcodec, OSX stuff), the thread
list can get quite populated. Setting the thread name helps when
debugging.

Since this is not portable, we check the OS variants in waf configure.
old-configure just gets a special-case for glibc, since doing a full

freely. This makes the position jump around.

Fix this by allowing icnreasing file position only. Reset it on seeking.
With crazy formats, this still could go wrong, but there's only so much
you can do.

wm4 cb642e7c84 player: slightly better cache underrun detection
Use the "native" underrun detection, instead of guessing by a low cache
duration. The new underrun detection (which was added with the original
commit) might have the problem that it's easy for the playloop to miss
the underrun event. The underrun is actually not stored as state, so if
the demuxer thread adds a new packet before the playloop happens to see
the state, it's as if it never happened. On the other hand, this means
that network was fast enough, so it should be just fine.

Also, should it happen that we don't know the cached range (the
ts_duration < 0 case), just wait until the demuxer goes idle (i.e.
read_packet() decides to stop). This pretty much should affect broken or
unusual files only, and there might be various things that could go
wrong. But it's more robust in the normal case: this situation also
happens when no packets have been read yet, and we don't want to
consider this as reason to resume playback.

wm4 c7208319d3 player: better cache status on status line
The cache percentage was useless. It showed how much of the total stream
cache was in use, but since the cache size is something huge and
unrelated to the bitrate or network speed, the information content of
the percentage was rather low.

Replace this with printing the duration of the demuxer-cached data, and
the size of the stream cache in KB.

I'm not completely sure about the formatting; suggestions are welcome.
Note that it's not easy to know how much playback time the stream cache
covers, so it's always in bytes.

wm4 dad90f616d player: fix basic playback
The "buffering" logic was active even if the stream cache was disabled.
This is contrary to what the manpage says. It also breaks playback
because of another bug: the demuxer cache is smaller than 2 seconds,
and thus the resume condition never becomes true.

Explicitly run this code only if the stream cache is enabled. Also, fix
the underlying problem of the breakage, and resume when the demuxer
thread stops reading in any case, not just on EOF.

Broken by previous commit. Unbreaks playback of local files.

wm4 0b428e4482 player: redo how stream caching and pausing on low cache works
Add the --cache-secs option, which literally overrides the value of
--demuxer-readahead-secs if the stream cache is active. The default
value is very high (10 seconds), which means it can act as network
cache.

Remove the old behavior of trying to pause once the byte cache runs
low. Instead, do something similar wit the demuxer cache. The nice
thing is that we can guess how many seconds of video it has cached,
and we can make better decisions. But for now, apply a relatively
naive heuristic: if the cache is below 0.5 secs, pause, and wait
until at least 2 secs are available.

Note that due to timestamp reordering, the estimated cached duration
of video might be inaccurate, depending on the file format. If the
file format has DTS, it's easy, otherwise the duration will seemingly
jump back and forth.

wm4 a8513f8b37 demux: reduce wakeups if no cache is active
The purpose of the unconditional pthread_cond_signal() when reading
cached DEMUXER_CTRLs and STREAM_CTRLs was apparently to update the
stream cache state. Otherwise, the cached fields would never be updated
when the stream is e.g. paused.

The same could be said about other CTRLs, but these aren't as important,
since they are normally updated while reading packet data.

In order to reduce wakeups, make this logic explicit.

wm4 c31a91230d demux: avoid unnecessary wakeups
If a packet is appended to a stream, and there were already packets
queued, nothing about the state changed, as far as the user (i.e. the
player) is concerned. Thus no wakeup is needed.

The pthread_cond_signal() call following this is not interesting - it
will simply be a NOP if there are actually no waiters.

wm4 b822faa6cf demux: add option to control the readahead buffer by a duration value
--demuxer-readahead-secs now controls how much the demuxer should
readahead by an amount of seconds. This is based on the raw packet
timestamps. It's not always very exact. For example, h264 in Matroska
does not store any linear timestamps (only PTS values which are going
to be reordered by the decoder), so this heuristic is usually off by
several hundred milliseconds.

The decision whether to readahead is basically OR-ed with the other
--demuxer-readahead-packets options. Change the manpage descriptions
to subtly convey these semantics.

wm4 1483fd443a demux: fix playback abort if --demuxer-thread is not used
Switching tracks caused cached_demux_control() to catch the command to
switch tracks, even if no thread was running. Thus, the tracks were
never really switched, and EOF happened immediately on playback start.

Fix it by not using the cache at all if the demuxer thread is disabled.
The cache code still has to be called somewhere, though, because it
handles stream metadata update.

Regression from today.

wm4 64e1132d39 demux: make track switching asynchronous
Because why not.

This can lead to reordering of operations between seeking and track
switching (happens when the demuxer wakes up after seek and track
switching operations were queued). Do the track switching strictly
before seeks if there is a chance of reordering, which guarantees that
the seek position will always start with key frames. The reverse
(seeking, then switching) does not really have any advantages.

(Not sure if the player relies on this behavior.)

wm4 4b4bd9e5f7 demux: asynchronous seeking
This tells the demuxer thread that it should seek, instead of waiting
until the demuxer thread is ready.

Care has to be taken about the state between seek request and actual
seeking: newly demuxed packets have to be discarded. We can't just
flush when doing the actual seek, because the user thread could read
these packets.

I'm wondering if this could lead to issues due to relaxed ordering of
operations. But it should be fine, since seeking influences packet
reading only, and seeking is always strictly done before that.

Currently, this will have no advantages; unless audio is disabled. Then
seeking as well as normal playback can be non-blocking.

wm4 5526603a43 demux: don't start reading if no packets were requested yet
Instead of starting to fill the packet queue if at least 1 stream is
selected, wait until there is at least 1 stream had new packets
requested.

In theory this is cleaner, because it allows you to e.g. do a seek and
then reselect streams without losing packets. Seeking marks all streams
as inactive, and without this new logic, the thread would read new
packets anyway right after seek.

wm4 ded02bb78c demux: make the cache refresh cached STREAM_CTRLs
This fixes the same symptom as the previous commit, but when the demuxer
thread is enabled. In this case, if nothing was read from the demuxer,
the STREAM_CTRLs weren't updated either. To the player, this looked like
the stream cache was never making progress, so playback was kept paused.

wm4 cfdb1312da demux: ensure demux_read_packet_async() always reads
In corner cases, it might be possible that a demux_read_packet_async()
call fails to make the demuxer thread to read more packets.

If a packet is queued, the function will simply return a packet, without
marking the stream as active. As a consequence, read_packet() might
decide not to read any further packets, and the demuxer will never read
a packet and wake up the playback thread.

This was originally done to align it with demux_read_packet() semantics;
just drop this.

wm4 24efaa3ad7 demux: fix a corner case
demux_read_any_packet() attempts to call read_packet(), but if no stream
is active, it can decide not to read anything. The function will return
NULL, which implies EOF. Fix this by explicitly
setting demux_stream->active if needed.

Also use dequeue_packet() instead of demux_read_packet(), because it's
cleaner. (Shouldn't change behavior.)

Possibly fixes #938.

wm4 1942e424e3 demux: fix opening pipes with demux_lavf
We told the demuxer that a pipe (if stream cache is enabled) is
seekable. This is because the stream cache is technically seekable, it's
just that seeking may fail at runtime if a non-cached byte range is
requested.

This caused libavformat to issue seeks on initialization (at least when
piping mp4 youtube videos). Initialization failed completely after
spamming tons of error messages.

So, if an unseekable stream is cached, tell the demuxer that the file is
not seekable. This gets reversed later (when printing a message about
caching an unseekable stream), so the user can still try his luck by
issuing a seek command. The important part is that libavformat
initialization will not take code paths that will unnecessarily seek for
whatever reasons.

wm4 848546f2de demux: fix problems with EOF
It was easy to get into a wakeup feedback loop on EOF. The reason that
EOF is complicated is that we try to retry reading when EOF is reached,
in case the EOF state actually disappears (e.g. when watching a
currently downloaded file).

This feature is probably worthless, since in practice you have to do a
seek to "unstuck" it anyway, but since the old code also did this, we
want to keep this behavior for now.

Avoid the feedback loop by introducing another EOF flag (last_eof), that
contains the actual previous EOF state, and is not overwritten when
retrying reading. Wakeup is skipped if the EOF state didn't change.

Also, actually call the wakeup callback when EOF is detected.

The line that adds "ds->active = false;" actually does nothing, but in
theory it's cleaner.

wm4 1301a90761 demux: add a demuxer thread
This adds a thread to the demuxer which reads packets asynchronously.
It will do so until a configurable minimum packet queue size is
reached. (See options.rst additions.)

For now, the thread is disabled by default. There are some corner cases
that have to be fixed, such as fixing cache behavior with webradios.

Note that most interaction with the demuxer is still blocking, so if
e.g. network dies, the player will still freeze. But this change will
make it possible to remove most causes for freezing.

Most of the new code in demux.c actually consists of weird caches to
compensate for thread-safety issues (with the previously single-threaded
design), or to avoid blocking by having to wait on the demuxer thread.

Most of the changes in the player are due to the fact that we must not
access the source stream directly. the demuxer thread already accesses
it, and the stream stuff is not thread-safe.

For timeline stuff (like ordered chapters), we enable the thread for the
current segment only. We also clear its packet queue on seek, so that
the remaining (unconsumed) readahead buffer doesn't waste memory.

Keep in mind that insane subtitles (such as ASS typesetting muxed into
mkv files) will practically disable the readahead, because the total
queue size is considered when checking whether the minimum queue size
was reached.

wm4 338004bcfc dvd, bluray, cdda: add demux_disc containing all related hacks
DVD and Bluray (and to some extent cdda) require awful hacks all over
the codebase to make them work. The main reason is that they act like
container, but are entirely implemented on the stream layer. The raw
mpeg data resulting from these streams must be "extended" with the
container-like metadata transported via STREAM_CTRLs. The result were
hacks all over demux.c and some higher-level parts.

Add a "disc" pseudo-demuxer, and move all these hacks and special-cases
to it.

For some ogg-over-icy streams, 2 updates are reported on stream start.
This is because libavformat reports an update right on start, while
including the same info in the "static" metadata. I don't know if that's
a bug or a feature.

wm4 a4d487f5b2 stream: don't use end_pos
Stop using it in most places, and prefer STREAM_CTRL_GET_SIZE. The
advantage is that always the correct size will be used. There can be no
doubt anymore whether the end_pos value is outdated (as it happens often
with files that are being downloaded).

Some streams still use end_pos. They don't change size, and it's easier
to emulate STREAM_CTRL_GET_SIZE using end_pos, instead of adding a
STREAM_CTRL_GET_SIZE implementation to these streams.

Make sure int64_t is always used for STREAM_CTRL_GET_SIZE (it was
uint64_t before).

Remove the seek flags mess, and replace them with a seekable flag. Every
stream must set it consistently now, and an assertion in stream.c checks
this. Don't distinguish between streams that can only be forward or
backwards seeked, since we have no such stream types.

wm4 e3c20bf350 stream: kill start_pos, remove --sb option
stream.start_pos was needed for optical media only, and (apparently) not
for very good reasons. Just get rid of it.

For stream_dvd, we don't need to do anything. Byte seeking was already
removed from it earlier.

For stream_cdda and stream_vcd, emulate the start_pos by offsetting the
stream pos as seen by the rest of mpv.

The bits in discnav.c and loadfile.c were for dealing with the code
seeking back to the start in demux.c. Handle this differently by
assuming the demuxer is always initialized with the stream at start
position, and instead seek back if initializing the demuxer fails.

Remove the --sb option, which worked by modifying stream.start_pos. If
someone really wants this option, it could be added back by creating a
"slice" stream (actually ffmpeg already has such a thing).

Stream-level chapters (like DVD etc.) did potentially not have

switched everything to use timestamps and that seems to work, so we can

This changes tag updates to use polling. This could be fixed later,
although the ICY stuff makes it a bit painful, so maybe it will remain
this way.

Also remove DEMUXER_CTRL_UPDATE_INFO. This was intended to check for tag
updates, but now we use a different approach.

wm4 0530447417 Add prelimimary (basic, possibly broken) dvdnav support
This readds a more or less completely new dvdnav implementation, though
it's based on the code from before commit 41fbcee. Note that this is
rather basic, and might be broken or not quite usable in many cases.

Most importantly, navigation highlights are not correctly implemented.
This would require changes in the FFmpeg dvdsub decoder (to apply a
different internal CLUT), so supporting it is not really possible right
now. And in fact, I don't think I ever want to support it, because it's
a very small gain for a lot of work. Instead, mpv will display fake
highlights, which are an approximate bounding box around the real
highlights.

Some things like mouse input or switching audio/subtitles stream using
the dvdnav VM are not supported.

Might be quite fragile on transitions: if dvdnav initiates a transition,
and doesn't give us enough mpeg data to initialize video playback, the
player will just quit.

This is added only because some users seem to want it. I don't intend to
make mpv a good DVD player, so the very basic minimum will have to do.
How about you just convert your DVD to proper video files?

These packets have to be explicitly dropped, because usually libavcodec
uses 0-sized packets to flush delayed frames, meaning just passing
through these packets would have bad consequences.

Normally, libavformat doesn't output 0-sized packets anyway. But I don't
want to take any chances, so don't delete it, and just move it out of
the way to demux.c.

Having the DTS directly can be useful for restoring PTS values.

The avi file format doesn't actually store PTS values, just DTS. An
older hack explicitly exported the DTS as PTS (ignoring the [I assume]
genpts generated non-sense PTS), which is not necessary anymore due to
this change.

wm4 904c73d2d2 demux: remove gsh field from sh_audio/sh_video/sh_sub
This used to be needed to access the generic stream header from the
specific headers, which in turn was needed because the decoders had
access only to the specific headers. This is not the case anymore, so
this can finally be removed again.

Also move the "format" field from the specific headers to sh_stream.

This is mostly cosmetic in nature, except that it also adds automatical
freeing of the decoder driver's state struct (which was in

wm4 a2a24b957e demux: simplify handling of filepos field
demuxer->filepos contains the byte offset of the last read packet. This
is so that the player can estimate the current playback position, if no
proper timestamps are available. Simplify it to use demux_packet->pos in
the generic demuxer code, instead of bothering every demuxer
implementation about it.

(Note that this is still a bit incorrect: it relfects the position of
the last packet read by the demuxer, not that returned to the user. But
that was already broken, and is not that trivial to fix.)

wm4 e91edf9aed demux: use talloc for certain stream headers
Slightly simplifies memory management. This might make adding a demuxer
cache wrapper easier at a later point, because you can just copy the
complete stream header, without worrying that the wrapper will free the
individual stream header fields.

wm4 22b3f522ca audio: add support for using non-interleaved audio from decoders directly
Most libavcodec decoders output non-interleaved audio. Add direct
support for this, and remove the hack that repacked non-interleaved
audio back to packed audio.

Remove the minlen argument from the decoder callback. Instead of
forcing every decoder to have its own decode loop to fill the buffer
until minlen is reached, leave this to the caller. So if a decoder
doesn't return enough data, it's simply called again. (In future, I
even want to change it so that decoders don't read packets directly,
but instead the caller has to pass packets to the decoders. This fits
well with this change, because now the decoder callback typically
decodes at most one packet.)

ad_mpg123.c receives some heavy refactoring. The main problem is that
it wanted to handle format changes when there was no data in the decode
output buffer yet. This sounds reasonable, but actually it would write
data into a buffer prepared for old data, since the caller doesn't know
about the format change yet. (I.e. the best place for a format change
would be _after_ writing the last sample to the output buffer.) It's
possible that this code was not perfectly sane before this commit,
and perhaps lost one frame of data after a format change, but I didn't
confirm this. Trying to fix this, I ended up rewriting the decoding
and also the probing.

wm4 53d3827843 Remove sh_audio->samplesize
This member was redundant. sh_audio->sample_format indicates the sample
size already.

The TV code is a bit strange: the redundant sample size was part of the
internal TV interface. Assume it's really redundant and not something
else. The PCM decoder ignores the sample size anyway.

The configure followed 5 different convetions of defines because the next guy
always wanted to introduce a new better way to uniform it[1]. For an
hypothetic feature 'hurr' you could have had:

  * #define HAVE_HURR 1   / #undef HAVE_DURR
  * #define HAVE_HURR     / #undef HAVE_DURR
  * #define CONFIG_HURR 1 / #undef CONFIG_DURR
  * #define HAVE_HURR 1   / #define HAVE_DURR 0
  * #define CONFIG_HURR 1 / #define CONFIG_DURR 0

All is now uniform and uses:
  * #define HAVE_HURR 1
  * #define HAVE_DURR 0

We like definining to 0 as opposed to `undef` bcause it can help spot typos
and is very helpful when doing big reorganizations in the code.

wm4 a49ab7cc2f demux: make determining seek capability generic
Instead of having each demuxer do it (only demux_mkv actually did...),
let generic code determine whether the file is seekable. This requires
adding exceptions to demuxers where the stream is not seekable, but the
demuxer is.

Sort-of try to improve handling of unseekable files in the player. Exit
early if the file is determined to be unseekable, instead of resetting
all decoders and then performing a pointless seek.

Add an exception to allow seeking if the file is not seekable, but the
stream cache is enabled. Print a warning in this case, because seeking
outside the cache (which we can't prevent since the demuxer is not aware
of this problem) still messes everything up.

wm4 c613d802bc talloc: change talloc destructor signature
Change talloc destructor so that they can never signal failure, and
don't return a status code. This makes our talloc copy even more
incompatible to upstream talloc, but on the other hand this is
preparation for getting rid of talloc entirely.

(The talloc replacement in the next commit won't allow the talloc_free
equivalent to fail, and the destructor return value would be useless.
But I don't want to change any mpv code either; the idea is that the
talloc replacement commit can be reverted for some time in order to
test whether the talloc replacement introduced a regression.)

wm4 35fd083828 demux: retrieve per-chapter metadata
Retrieve per-chapter metadata, but don't do much with it. We just make
the metadata of the _current_ chapter available as chapter-metadata
property. Returning the full chapter list with metadata would be no
problem, except that the property interface isn't really good with
structured data, so it's not available for now.

Not sure if it's worth it, but it was requested via github issue #201.

wm4 3fc3bf70f9 stream: add uncompressed rar support
Apparently, it is popular to store large files in uncompressed rar
archives. Extracting files is not practical, and some media players
suport playing directly from uncompressed rar (at least VLC and some
DirectShow components).

Storing or accessing files this way is completely idiotic, but it is
a common practice, and the ones subjected to this practice can't do
much to change this (at least that's what I assume/hope). Also, it's
a feature request, so we say yes.

This code is mostly taken from VLC (commit f6e7240 from their git tree).
We also copy the way this is done: opening a rar file by itself yields
a playlist, which contains URLs to the actual entries in the rar file.
Compressed entries are simply skipped.

Modeled after the old playlist_parser.c, but actually new code, and it
works a bit differently.

Demuxers (and sometimes streams) are the component that should be used
to open files and to determine the file format. This was already done
for subtitles, but playlists still use a separate code path.

wm4 3269bd1780 demux: rewrite probing and demuxer initialization
Get rid of the strange and messy reliance on DEMUXER_TYPE_ constants.
Instead of having two open functions for the demuxer callbacks (which
somehow are both optional, but you can also decide to implement both...),
just have one function. This function takes a parameter that tells the
demuxer how strictly it should check for the file headers. This is a
nice simplification and allows more flexibility.

Remove the file extension code. This literally did nothing (anymore).

Change demux_lavf so that we check our other builtin demuxers first
before libavformat tries to guess by file extension.

wm4 4cda1d113e core: completely change handling of attached picture pseudo video
Before this commit, we tried to play along with libavformat and tried
to pretend that attached pictures are video streams with a single
frame, and that the frame magically appeared at the seek position when
seeking. The playback core would then switch to a mode where the video
has ended, and the "remaining" audio is played.

This didn't work very well:
- we needed a hack in demux.c, because we tried to read more packets in
  order to find the "next" video frame (libavformat doesn't tell us if
  a stream has ended)
- switching the video stream didn't work, because we can't tell
  libavformat to send the packet again
- seeking and resuming after was hacky (for some reason libavformat sets
  the returned packet's PTS to that of the previously returned audio
  packet in generic code not related to attached pictures, and this
  happened to work)
- if the user did something stupid and e.g. inserted a deinterlacer by
  default, a picture was never displayed, only an inactive VO window)
- same when using a command that reconfigured the VO (like switching
  aspect or video filters)
- hr-seek didn't work

For this reason, handle attached pictures as separate case with a
separate video decoding function, which doesn't read packets. Also,
do not synchronize audio to video start in this case.

wm4 e5544e2da3 demux: improve DVD sub auto-selection hack
The code touched by this commit makes sure that DVD subtitle tracks
known by libdvdread but not known by demux_lavf can be selected and
displayed properly. These subtitle tracks have the first packet
some time late in the packet stream, so that libavformat won't
immediately recognize them, and will add the track as soon as the
first packet is seen during normal demuxing.

demux_mpg used to handle this elegantly: you just set the MPEG ID of
the stream you wanted. demux_lavf couldn't do this, so it was emulated
with a DEMUXER_CTRL. This commit changes it so that new streams are
selected by default (if autoselect is enabled), and the playloop
simply can take appropriate action before the lower layer throws away
the first packet.

This also changes the demux_lavf behavior that subtitle packets are
always demuxed, even if not needed. (They were immediately thrown away,
so there was no advantage to this.)

Further, this adds the ability to demux.c to deal with demuxing more
than one stream of a kind at once. (Though currently it's not useful.)

wm4 6ede485e4b core: don't access demux_stream outside of demux.c, make it private
Generally remove all accesses to demux_stream from all the code, except
inside of demux.c. Make it completely private to demux.c.

This simplifies the code because it removes an extra concept. In demux.c
it is reduced to a simple packet queue. There were other uses of
demux_stream, but they were removed or are removed with this commit.

Remove the extra "ds" argument to demux fill_buffer callback. It was
used by demux_avi and the TV pseudo-demuxer only.

Remove usage of d_video->last_pts from the no-correct-pts code. This
field contains the last PTS retrieved after a packet that is not NOPTS.
We can easily get this value manually because we read the packets
ourselves. Reuse sh_video->last_pts to store the packet PTS values. It
was used only by the correct-pts code before, and like d_video->last_pts,
it is reset on seek. The behavior should be exactly the same.

wm4 fa74be880c tv: add hack in preparation of demux_stream removal
Currently, all demuxer fill_buffer functions have a demux_stream
parameter. We want to remove that, but the TV code still depends on
it. Add a hack to remove that dependency.

The problem with the TV code is that reading video and audio frames
blocks, so in order to avoid a deadlock, you should read either of
them only if the decoder actually requests new data.

wm4 a522483629 demux: remove facility for partial packet reads
Partial packet reads were needed because the video/audio parsers were
working on top of them. So it could happen that a parser read a part of
a packet, and returned that to the decoder. With libavformat/libavcodec,
packets are already parsed, and everything is much simpler.

Most of the simplifications in ad_spdif could have been done earlier.
Remove some other stuff as well, like the questionable slave mode start
time reporting (could be replaced by proper code, but we don't bother).
Remove the unused skip_audio_frame() functionality as well (it was used
by old demuxers). Some functions become private to demux.c, like
demux_fill_buffer(). Introduce new packet read functions, which have
simpler semantics. Packets returned from them are owned by the caller,
and all packets in the demux.c packet queue are considered unread.
Remove special code that dropped subtitle packets with size 0. This
used to be needed because it caused special cases in the old code.

wm4 05ae5afd62 demux: remove separate arrays for audio/video/sub streams, simplify
These separate arrays were used by the old demuxers and are not needed
anymore. We can simplify track switching as well.

One interesting thing is that stream/tv.c (which is a demuxer) won't
respect --no-audio anymore. It will probably work as expected, but it
will still open an audio device etc. - this is because track selection
is now always done with the runtime track switching mechanism. Maybe
the TV code could be updated to do proper runtime switching, but I
can't test this stuff.

wm4 aac5d758c5 demux: remove audio parser
The audio parser was needed only by the "old" demuxers, and
demux_rawaudio. All other demuxers output already parsed packets.

demux_rawaudio is usually for raw audio, so using a parser with it
doesn't usually make sense. But you can also force it to read
compressed formats with fixed packet sizes, in which case the parser
would have been used. This use case is probably broken now, but you
will be able to do the same thing with libavformat demuxers.

wm4 af0c41e162 Remove old demuxers
Delete demux_avi, demux_asf, demux_mpg, demux_ts. libavformat does
better than them (except in rare corner cases), and the demuxers have
a bad influence on the rest of the code. Often they don't output
proper packets, and require additional audio and video parsing. Most
work only in --no-correct-pts mode.

Remove them to facilitate further cleanups.

wm4 3f3ffd0de4 core: update metadata during playback, allow streams to export metadata
STREAM_CTRL_GET_METADATA will be used to poll for streamcast metadata.
Also add DEMUXER_CTRL_UPDATE_INFO, which could in theory be used by
demux_lavf.c. (Unfortunately, libavformat is too crappy to read metadata
mid-stream for mp3 or ogg, so we don't implement it.)

wm4 cfa45c40dc sub: add demux_libass wrapper, drop old hacks
demux_libass.c allows us to make subtitle format detection part of the
normal file loading process. libass has no probe function, but trying to
load the start of a file (the first 4 KB) is good enough. Hope that
libass can even handle random binary input gracefully without printing
stupid log messages, and that the libass parser doesn't accept too many
non-ASS files as input.

This doesn't handle the -subcp option correctly yet. This will be fixed
later.
